Men's golf team looking strong

After only one tournament in
four months, the University
men’s golf team will get back
into the swing of things March
23-24, when they take on a
15-team field in the Pepsi/Nor
thern California Intercollegiate
tournament in Stockton. Calif.
The Ducks, ranked 19th na
tionally, are defending cham
pions and one of the favorites,
along with Fresno State Univer
sity. to win the tournament.
“We have an excellent
chance to win it." said golf
coach Scott Krieger. "We're
defending champions and
Fresno State won the PCAA
(Pacific Coast Athletic Associa
tion) on this course last
year... I guess we’re both

Australian junior Steve Rin
toul will lead the Ducks in
Stockton. Rintoul. an All
American candidate, had the
best single-round score (70) at
the Pacific 10 Conference tour
nament last year and tied for
seventh overall.
Joining him will be team
mates Rob Huff, a senior from
Boise. Idaho; Tony Joyner, a
senior from Medford; and Tim
Hval and Chris Holzgang, both
sophomores from Beaverton.
Along with Fresno State, the
Ducks must exhibit a strong
showing against the remaining
field if they want to gain
leverage in the NCAA
championships.
"Anytime you’re in a tourna
ment with a lot of teams in your
area, it has an effect on the
NCAA qualifying.” Krieger
said. "We need to beat a lot of
teams. It would help us a lot if
we could beat Long Beach. San
Jose State and Pacific.”
The Elkhorn Country Club
course layout in Stockton will
challenge all golfers. It’s short
and tight with little room for er
ror.
In just a little over three years.
Krieger has guided the Ducks to
two consecutive runner-up
finishes in the Pac-10; eight
tournament titles; 10 top-10
tournament placings; and a bid
to last years’ NCAA champion
ships, where Oregon finished
18th.
Krieger also collected Pac-10
Coach of the Year honors for
himself in 1984-85.
What more could a coach
want? Krieger wants a Pac-10 ti
tle and thinks the Ducks could
get it since the Pac-10 Cham
pionships will be played in
Oregon’s backyard at the
Eugene Country Club.
“We’d like to win our con
ference, and I think we have a
good shot on our home course,”
he said. “This might be the
edge that puts us over the top.”
A home course may help, but
any hopes of a Pac-10 cham
pionship rest with team perfor
mance.
“Last year we had more
depth, but this year we’re
stronger in the first five posi
tions, and considering we’re
playing five and six-man tour
naments, that’s better,” Krieger
said.
”1 think this is the best team
we’ve had here in my three
years. They’ve worked hard,”
he said.
Hopefully that hard work will
begin paying off on the fairways
and greens in Stockton over
Spring Break.
