GLOSSARY
AIDS(Acqulred Immune Deficiency
Syndrom*)- A serious condition
characterized by the breakdown of the
body's natural immunity against disease.
With this loss in immune response, the
individual faiia prey to a host of what are
called ‘opportunistic infections.” AIDS is
transmitted through intimate (sexual)
contact and by direct exposure to
contaminated blood or blood products.
There is no proven case in which AIDS has
been transmitted by casual contact of any
kind.
ANTIBODY- Protein substance developed by
the body to fight disease organisms. Not
effective against a virus such as AIDS
which exists within ceHs.
ARC(AIDS Related Complex)- A milder
illness characterized by fever, enlargement
of the lymph nodes, chronic fatigue, weight
loss, and fungus infection of mouth/throat.
So far, only a minority of persons with ARC
have progressed to have full blown AIDS.
CARRIER- Virus-infected individuals with no
symptoms. The largest group of people
infected with the AIDS virus are not
presently ill, since they have no symptoms,
and can be identified only by a blood test for
antibody to the AIDS virus. These
individuals represent a major potential
source of new infection since they are fully
capable of transmitting the virus to others.
HIV(Human Immunodeficiency Virus)* The
virus that causes AIOS. Also called
HTLV-III/LAV.
INCUBATION PERIOD* The time between
infection with the AIDS virus and the onset
of symptoms. Seems to range from 6
months to 7 years or more. At present, not
everyone exposed to the virus has
developed the disease within a 7 year
period.
KAPOSI’S SARCOMA (KS)- A form of cancer
usually occuring on the surface of the skin
or in the mouth, although It may also spread
to other organs of the body. KS is normally
found as a slowly progressing cancer in
elderly men.
PNEUMOCYSTIC CARINII (PCP)- A parasitic
infection of the lungs. One of the two rare
diseases that affect 85% of AIDS patients.
PCP has symptoms similar to any other
form of severe pneumonia, cough, fever,
and difficulty breathing. This infection
rarely if ever affects individuals with
normal immunity.
"SAFE SEX"* Relatively "safer sex" is
condom protected sex with the use of
spermicidal foam.
Sexual practices involving tissue injury
(e.g., anal sex) are extremely dangerous
and should be avoided. Unprotected oral sex
carries the potential of viral transmission.
