Health Center reaccredited
to ensure quality standards

Suffering students can take
consolation in the fact that they
will get high-quality health care
when they visit the University’s
recently reaccredited Student
Health Center.
The three-year accreditation,
given by the Accreditation
Association for Ambulatory
Health Care, means that the Stu
dent Health Center has met or
exceeded all of the standards for
quality health care established
by the association.
The health center is one of the
few student health centers in
the United States to be ac
credited. There are less than 25
accredited university student
health centers in the nation,
said Eileen Meehan, assistant
executive director for
accreditation.
“It’s sort of like a ‘Good
Housekeeping’ seal of ap
proval,” she said.
The accreditation is basically
a peer review of care given. The
University health center passed
the stringent accreditation stan
dards with flying colors,
Meehan said.
“Literally, they go through
with a fine-tooth comb,” said
Robert Petit, the medical ad
ministrator at the health center.
A team of highly trained ex

mended accreditation.
“They really felt that we have
a good health center." Petit
said.
The health center was ac
credited in 1983 after its first
review by the examiners.
“It's quite an achievement to
make a three-year term of ac
creditation on the first time."
Meehan said.
The review is given on a
voluntary basis at the invitation
of the health center. It takes a lot
of work to get ready for a
review. Meehan said.
“We think accreditation is
very important.” said Dr. James
Jackson, the health center direc
tor. "By meeting and/or ex

helps us to continually review
and improve the quality of care
we provide for our University
