Defense and rebounding were
the magic words for the Oregon
men's basketball team Sunday
afternoon.
The Ducks were able to post a
68-55 Pacific-10 Conference
win in McArthur Court over the
visiting Stanford Cardinal
because they dominated the
boards and were outstanding on
defense.
“The thing that pleased me
most was I had just told them
(the team) it was going to be an
old blue-collar, gutsy game and
that the boards and the defense
were going to tell the tale it
certainly did." said Oregon
coach Don Monson.
“The only thing that kept us
in the game the first half was
our defense and outstanding job
on the boards." Monson said.
The Ducks were forced to rely
on a tenacious defense and solid
rebounding in the first half due
to a poor offensive showing.
In the first eight minutes of
the game. Oregon was a mere
two of 12 from the field (16.7
percent). The Ducks sharpened
their accuracy a bit as the half
wore on — hitting seven of their
last 13 shots — to finish the first
half shooting a little more than
35 percent.
"We played hard defensively
and on the boards in the first
half and that kept us in the
game even though we weren’t
shooting that well as a team,"
said forward Jesse Nash, who
scored 11 points and grabbed
four rebounds in the first half.
“We just kept playing hard
defense and rebounding and
then our shots started to fall in
the second half.”
While the Ducks were having
difficulty putting the ball in the
hoop as a team. Nash was keep
ing the Ducks in the game
almost single-handedly. The
b-foot-5 transfer drilled five of
six shots in the first half. He

finished the game with 14
points on six of nine from the
field.
"Usually at half I'm upset
about something, but I really
couldn’t be upset with my kids
at all I told them they had
worked hard, rebounded and
played defense, but the shots
just hadn't gone," Monson
said. "It all ended up good
