Ducks face tough contests against Cal, Stanford
By Dennis Fernandes
Of the t'.merald
The Oregon women’s basketball team faces a
“must-win” situation this weekend when it rounds out
the first half of the Pacific- to Conference action against
the University of California at Berkeley and against
Stanford University.
After spending four of the last five games on the
road and looking to a four-game swing starting next
week, the Ducks will be feeling fortunate when they
host Cal tonight at 7:30 p.m. within the friendly con
fines of McArthur Court.
The last time Oregon hosted a league game, it was
an easy 83-63 win over University of Arizona, propell
ing the Ducks into a showdown against the two Los
Angeles schools with an unblemished league record.
Since then, they have won only one of four league
games.
Now at 4-3 in the league and 12-5 overall, Oregon
currently is lodged in a three-way tie for fourth place
with Oregon State University and the University of
California at l.os Angeles.
The Golden Bears. 11-5 overall and 3-4 in league
play, are another team that has been struggling of late,
although they are the only team to defeat USC in league
The Ducks will be facing one of the Pac-lO’s
premier centers in Jennifer Bennett, who registered a
school record 45 points against the Wildcats. Prior to
that feat. Bennett was averaging 18.7 points and 10 re
bounds a game and is the Pac-lO’s second-leading
scorer and rebounder at 10.2 and 11.3 a contest.
It will be an international night at Mac Court, with
Cal sporting three double-figure scorers from Finland to
counter Oregon's West German connection of Stefanie
kasperski and Gabi Neumann. Seija Leino is the
second-leading scorer at 12.9 points a contest, with An
ja Heilman (11.3) and Mia kuusisto (10.1) rounding out
Cal’s top scorers.
The Bears appear to match up well against
Oregon's 1-2-3 punch of Kasperski. Neumann and
6-foot-3 Kris Glidden. Along with Bennett’s scoring
and rebounding potential. Amanda Ray adds further
headache to the Ducks down low with 9.9 rebounds per
contest. However. Oregon is tops in the conference
with 49.4 team rebounds per game with Neumann
leading the Ducks at R.l.
Saturday night’s meeting with Stanford marks only
the second game between these two schools (the last
was in 1981, a 97-62 win for the Ducks). The Cardinal.
11-6 for the year, go into tonight’s game against the
Beavers with a three-game winning streak.
