Chocolate company sponsors fun run

The sixth annual Valentine’s
Day Truffle Trot, a fun run
sponsored by the Euphoria
Chocolate Company, will take
place Feb. 8 to raise money for
the Association of Retarded
Citizens of Lane County (ARC).
Runners, walkers, joggers
and wheelchair entrants can
participate in a two-mile run.
beginning at 1 p.m., or a four
mile run, beginning at 1:45
p.m. Entrance fees are $9
through Jan. 31 or $10 Feb. 1
through Feb. 7.
Entry blanks are available at
Eugene/Springfield area
athletic stores. Prince Puckler
ice cream stores, the YMCA and
the Euphoria Chocolate Com
pany. 6 W. 17th Ave.
All registrants will receive a
T-shirt and a truffle. Awards
will be given to the top five
overall finishers in women’s,
men’s and wheelchair divisions
in both races. The course starts
and finishes at Alton Baker
Park.
ARC' works to improve the
lives of children and adults who
are mentally retarded or
developmentally disabled. ARC
has been active in Lane County
since 1952, the largest and
strongest organization assisting
the mentally retarded in
Oregon.
Bob Bury, owner of the
Euphoria Chocolate Company,
believes that ARC' is an extreme
ly valuable program in the com
munity. "It doesn’t get the at
tention that other groups in the
area like Easter Seals or Red
Cross get. That’s one reason I
feel good about the race," he
said.
The Truffle Trot netted
$3,000 last year and during the
last five years, $10,000 in pro
ceeds has been given to ARC',

Even though he’s not chair of
the Energy Subcommittee of
Appropriations, I believe he’s
still an important participant.”
Mason said.
Yih was less optimistic. “I
imagine there will be a lot of
states who will offer a free
package of land.” Yih said.

of $109,000, claiming she
violated a law known as the
“anti-black-listing act,” Force

The suit claims Brence “did,
by threats of intimidation,
endeavor to prevent plaintiff
(Sturtz) from continuing and
performing work as Emerald
editor.”
Brence had no comment
about the suit.
Both parties must respond to
the suit within 30 days of
receiving it. Force said.

to us needing to donate land to
the SSC, we would do it in a
minute,” Mason said.
Mason believes participating
in the process is beneficial even
if Oregon isn't chosen for the
site, he said. "The SSC is not
the only high energy physics
project.” he said.
“To eventually get some of
those projects, you've got to
have been down the path once.
It brings Oregon kind of into the
high energy physics field,” he
said.

Bury and his wife. Sue Sab
bot, decided to hold the first
Truffle Trot because they were
running in Eugene road races
and wanted to give something
back to the community.
In addition to the awards for
winners, a drawing of 50 to 00
prizes will be held following
the race. These prizes range
from dinners in local
restaurants to 10-pound blocks
of chocolate.
Me attributes the growing suc
cess of the Truffle Trot to its
easy accessibility, its creative T
shirt design that changes each
year and its relaxed
atmosphere.

Legislators pledge to hold
hearings on research park

Eugene Mn . Brian Obie and Lane County legislators
made assurances in Salem Thursday that citizens will have
the opportunity to participate in the planning process of the
Riverfront Research Park.
In response to press accounts and the excitement
generated by Gov. Neil Goldschmidt's visit to Eugene Mon
day. "the perception just developed that this was a done
deal, and nothing can be further from the truth.” said Rep.
Dave Dix.
The Riverfront Research Park Commission, the Eugene
City Council and the Eugene Planning Commission will hold
public hearings. Obie said.
In addition. Dix will ask the Trade and Economic
Development Committee and the Ways and Means Commit
tee to hold hearings in Eugene to discuss the project. "There
