Death and intrigue invade abbey
in believable "Name of the Rose"
Who. in the name of God, is
getting away with murder?
No one knows. But Brother
William of Baskerville (Sean
Connery) means to find out. The
abbey to which he and other
Franciscan monks have come to
debate the merits of poverty
with papal advocates is amuck
with murders that allude to the
Apocalypse.

One monk is discovered dead
at the foot of the cliff below the
abbey; another turns up in a vat
of pig's blood and still another
is found bloated and blue in his
hath.
Cries that it is the devil's
work abound in the abbey. But
William is convinced that
natural rather than supernatural
forces art* at work and that the
whole series of nasty deaths has
something to do with a library,
a book by Aristotle and arsenic.
Truth makes for strange
bedfellows.

fascinating and frequently il
luminating movie makes clear.
"The Name of the Rose" is
more than a medieval mystery
and Connery's character more
than a pious Sherlock Holmes.
Connery is splendid as the
puckish William, alternately
undermining his order and
religion and then reaffirming it.
while he wrestles with his own
dark demons of pride, weakness
and guilt. No lames Hood here,
but a multi-faceted person and
performance that should not go
u n a p p r e c i a t e d o r
uncommended.
Hut grand as "The Name of
tin* Rose" is. it is not without its
faults. Most notably: un
necessary subplots and
characters that detract from the
main theme, a prolonged and
totally tasteless sex scene, and a
tendency toward graphic gore.
Hut all these flaws can be
forgiven or at least ignored,
because the central strength of
this movie is to show us vividly
that the road to hell is paved
with good intentions and sug
gest just what these intentions
might be. Or as William puts it:
“The step from ecstatic vision
to insane frenzy is too brief.”
