anger, to protect women, and to
take the lead and assert
themselves, she said.
Men need to accept that rape
is a male-initiated violent act
perpetuated by society's tradi
tional definitions of male and
female behavior, she said. “It is
important to realize that it is
men’s responsibility to combat
sexual violence; it’s their job.
Therefore, it’s important for
men to be humble and sensitive
about their participation,’’ she
said.
Rob Tarver, a Eugene
businessman a n d c o -
coordinator of the group, said
it’s often difficult for men to
communicate because society
has programmed them to be ag
gressive and dominant.
Men trade off contact and
sharing for dominance, and
often have a lack of trust, love
and caring, he said. They also
may be lonely, he said, adding
that women don’t always
realize that men are jealous of
the strong bonds of friendship
women often form.
Men need to acquire more
traditional female roles such as
caring and displaying emotion,
he said, and women need to ac
quire more traditional male
qualities such as assertiveness.
According to Lambert, it is
helpful for men to work side by
side with women to stop rape
“because men are often reluc
tant to believe that they or their
friends could have dominated
women sexually.
“They provide a necessary
role model for other men,” she
said. “When they admit that
they have at some time commit
ted marital rape or pressured
their partner into having sex,
it’s very powerful.”

end rape isn’t easy, but it is very
important. Part of the work re
quires us to become new men.

"I hear a lot of criticism of the
pro-feminist men's movement
from other men. th.it vve are
wimps cowing to radical
lesbians.
"We have to take respon
sibility for ourselves and build
our own strengths in a variety of
ways." he said.
There are currently between
100 and 200 anti-violence
groups for men nationwide. The
Eugene-based Men Against
Rape is a part of this national
coalition.
The group was founded in
February 1985 and received
funding from the ASUO for the
first time this year. The group is
open to both men and women,
and includes University
students and community
members. Both Tarver and
Perry have received training in
rape crisis counseling.
Men Against Rape meets on
Tuesdays at 7 p.m. in the EMU.
The room number is posted on
the EMU daily events board. Its
office is in Suite 1. EMU.
Part of the meeting is spent
discussing business matters,
and part is spent exploring cur
rent relevant issues. Members
often discuss their feelings and
uncertainties about male/female
dynamics, socialization in a
rape culture and sexism.
The group will help with the
Rape Awareness Symposium.
Feb. 17-19. and will sponsor the
Men and Masculinity Con
ference. March 7-9. It also sup
ports the Women's Task Force
"Take Hack the Night” march,
scheduled this year for Feb. 19.

only free zone in El Salvador,
Loving said.
In 1977, the university had
26,000 students enrolled. Now
it has 32,000. AndUES officials
are demanding that the govern
ment properly fund the univer
sity. Its budget is written into,
and guaranteed by, the
Salvadoran constitution.
The UES is receiving money
for faculty and university
workers' salaries, but it is not
receiving any money for
rebuilding the University or for
basic supplies.
“The rector said right now
they need $25 million just to get
back to where they were just
before the intervention,” Mac
Donald said.
“The future of the country
has been damaged directly by
the government withholding
the university’s budget,” Lov
ing said.
“What we know, and as a
delegation what we were able to
perceive — and it is very clear
in talking to the various groups
we did meet with — is that the
university is a sort of a thorn in
the side of the government,”
MacDonald said.
"The rector and the vice rec
tor directly came out and said
we, as IJ.S. delegates, have to
remember the U.S. is financing
their repression.” Loving said.
"They are almost risking their
lives by saying that."
