Ducks host Huskies tonight

Oregon coach Don Monson and the men's
basketball team will be looking to regain some
confidence when they begin a string of four con
secutive home games at McArthur Court, hosting
the University of Washington tonight at 7:30 p.m.
I he Ducks are in the midst of a three-game
losing streak, their longest of the season, suffer
ing recent defeats to Oregon State University,
UCLA ami USC on the road.
Although unable to register a win. Oregon
played tough in all three games. The Ducks had
the lead in the second half against both OSU and
UCLA and were within reaching distance of USC
with less than five minutes two play, but all to no
avail.
The Ducks. H-8 overall and 2-3 in the I’ac-tO,
now have those and two other conference road
losses behind them and better things to look for
ward to at Mac: Court.
Oregon will now enjoy a string of seven in
nine outings in Mac Court beginning tonight with
the Huskies. The return home is a welcome one
for the Ducks as they have a five-game win streak
in "the Pit" and are 5-1 on the season at home,
losing only their opener to Idaho State
University.
But the Ducks will not have an easy task
tonight, confronting what coach Monson con
siders probably the best balanced team in the
conference.
The Huskies. 10-7 on the season and 4-2 in con
ference play, feature center Chris VVelp, the
teams' leading scorer and rebounder. VVelp. who
was the recipient of the Pac-10 Player of the Year
award last season, is averaging 21.4 points and
9.1 rebounds a game
With Washington's possible size advantage.
Monson is expected to stick with the most recent
lineup used on the Los Angeles trip. Abandoning
the Ducks' three-guard alignment. Monson
replaced guard Kick Osborn with forward Jesse
Nash, who started four games in December.
Nash responded well after re-entering the
starting lineup. He scored Hi points and grabbed
15 rebounds in southern California, including a
career-high 14 against USC.

Oregon’s frantic schedule
will not have let up when they
take on the 7-7 Cougars Thurs
day. WSU has struggled since
winning their first five games of
the year and are winless in five
tries against Pac-10 rivals. The
Ducks own a 13-game winning
streak over the Cougars.
The pivotal matchup will
come Saturday against the
Huskies, who are a half-game
out of first place at 4-1 (12-3
overall). Washington is ranked
23rd in the nation this week by
USA Today, and there’s no
doubt why.
Heiny ranks the Husky
defense right up there with
Oregon State University’s, and
they are out rebounding their
opponents by an amazing
13-board margin a contest.

before losing to Arizona State
University last Thursday.
