Miller shines in Hula Bowl
By the Associated Press
HONOLULU, Hawaii. - The
West beat the East in three col
lege football all-star games over
the weekend — the Hula Bowl
at Honolulu, the Japan Bowl at
Yokohama and the East-West
Shrine Classic at Stanford.
Calif.
At the Hula Bowl, two players
with s t r o n g b a s e ball
backgrounds led tin? West to a
16-14 victory.
Oregon quarterback Chris
Miller passed for 214 yards and
a touchdown, while Southern
California cornerback Louis
Brock had two interceptions for
the winners.
Brock, son of baseball Hall of
Earner Lou Brock, also has
played baseball at Southern Cal.
But he may pursue a pro foot
ball career.
“I’d have to say I’m leaning
to football because I have put a
lot more time into it.” he said.
"Most of my training has been
in football.”
Miller has played minor
league shortstop in the Seattle
Mariners’ organization. After
the game, however, he didn’t
rule out pro football.
“I’m having a good time play
ing football now,” he said.
Miller’s 10 completions in
cluded a 4-yard touchdown
pass to Washington’s Lonzell
Hill and passes of 55. 48 and 47
yards.
“I didn’t get the opportunity
to throw the long ball in college
because the team had no deep
threat,” he said.
“Most people never hear too
much about Oregon since we're
near the bottom of the Fac -10
and on the West Coast,” Miller
added. “But now they know
who 1 am.”
In japan. K.C. Clark of San
lose State intercepted three
passes to spark the West’s 24-17
victory.
“It seemed like I was just in
the right place at the right
time,” he said after being nam
ed the game’s outstanding
defensive player.
Clark's final interception sot
up the West's winning score. In
the fourth quarter, with his
team trailing 17-16, he picked
off a pass by Alabama’s Mike
Shula in the end zone and ran it
back to his 34 before lateraling
to teammate Mark Moore of
Oklahoma State. Moore ran 18
yards to the East 48.
Three plays later, Matt
Stevens of UCl*A hit Stephen
Baker of Fresno State with a
36-yard touchdown pass.
Stevens then passed to Iowa's
Robert Smith for a two-point
conversion.
East quarterback Vinny
Testaverde, the Heisman
Trophy winner from Miami,
completed 10 of 18 passes for
145 yards, but had three tosses
intercepted. Stevens connected

“The second half we got a lit
tle ratty and really didn’t play
that well and kept letting them
back into the game. Had we not
done that, it may have saved a
few nerves at the end of the
game,” he said.
But the coach had to be pleas
ed with the first half, especially
the way Drouet handled the
press. The 5-foot-4 sparkplug
set the tone for the Ducks by
pushing the ball up the court
with authority and was in
strumental in establishing the
Oregon half-court offense.
Heiny had to be pleased with
his team’s defense, which used
their height advantage to in
timidate the Beavers into a .306
shooting percentage for the first
half. Kasperski got four of her

The Ducks hope that first half
is indicative in tonight's up
coming contest against the
University of Arizona. Oregon
sits among the leaders in the
Pac-10 with a 2-0 record (8-2
overall) and hopes to improve
on that in the 7:30 game at
McArthur Court.
The Wildcats have been
struggling of late and are
winless in the Pac-10 (0-3. 5-7
overall). They are coming off a
rough weekend against the Los
Angeles-area schools, losing to
University of Southern Califor
nia. 96-60, and UCLA. 66-55.
