Telecourse provides alternative
to ordinary University courses
The University will present a telecourse on the
history of the Uivil Rights Movement in America
this term. The course will be based on a six-part
Oregon Pubis Broadr astirig Service television
series.
The TV series called "EyesOn The Prize.” will
lie broadc as! on PBS stations throughout Oregon
tieginning |«n. 21 and ending Feb 25.
The series was developed by The Civil Rights
Project. Inc., a Boston based in<iependenl film
companv founded in 1908 The recently com
pleted series is being offered by the PBS Adult
learning Service program for the first time this
winter
Telecoursen are offered regularly at the Univer
sity through various departments in conjunction
with the Community Education Program
The fee for the course is $55 for full-time UO
students and $1H4 for the general public.
The class meets fan. 14 for an introductory ses
sion with University Professor (Lalvin Harris. The
rest of the course is based on independent study
of the films and readings assigned by Harris
"The readings are intended to supplement the
series and to give students an historical overview
of the struggle in race relations.” Harris said
In addition, some readings will focus on the
dynamics between the organized labor movement
and the Civil Rights Movement "That's one
thin# that's not in tin- Eyes On I he Prize series,
or at least it’s not emphasized as much as it ought
to be.” Harris said.
The series primarily focuses on the period bet
ween 1**54 and 1905. According to the PBS
preview. “Eyes On The Prize takes the point of
view that the period of the contemporary Civil
Kights Movement is one of the most significant in
our history'.“
The first part of the series. “The Awakening."
plays |an. 21 at 10 p m and Jan 22 at noon "The
Awakening" will focus on posl-World War II
events that led to the modern black freedom stug
gle. including such stories as the lynching in
Mississippi of 14-year-old Emmett Till, and the
Montgomery, Alabama boycott of public buses
The final five parts will be shown at the follow
ing limes:
• part two. "Fighting Back." will air |an. 28 at 10
p m. and Feb. 5 at noon;
• part three. "Ain't Scared of Your Jails.” will air
Feb 4 at 10 pm;
•part four. “No Easy Walk." will air keb. 11 at 10
p m. and Feb 12 at noon;
•part five, "Mississippi: Is This America?" will
air Feb. 18 at 10 p m and Feb. 19 at noon:
• part six, "A Bridge to Freedom." will air Feb 25
at 10 p m and Feb. 28 at noon.

an independent, non-profil
organization, owns the radio
station, said Clifton Cole, ac
counting executive director of
the foundation.
This fall the University open
ed KWBX-FM in Bend under a
similar arrangement. KWAX
and KWBX are the only 24-hour
all-classical public radio sta
tions in Oregon.
KWAX has received retpiests
from other areas in Oregon to
establish broadcasts but the
response was greatest from Coos
County and Bend.
"While down the road we
would consider expanding, no
other places are high enough a
priority to warrant it right
now," Bjornstad said.
