is given an extra letter when hired that says,
"you're hired pending a check of your grades at
the end of this term," Romm says.
Until about four years ago, the housing
department did not hire sophomores as RAs,
Romm says. Changing the rule resulted in a larger
pool of applicants, he says.
“There was a feeling from the people who
were RAs at the time that we were losing a real
enthusiastic bunch of people by not hiring
sophomores,” Romm says.
Freshmen are almost never hired as RAs
unless they are older because they often are still
trying to adjust to college life, he says.
"We don't feel freshman have enough
maturity within the setting of a university," he
says.
Most RAs are in their third year of school
pither as sophomores or juniors. Romm says. Few
graduate students are RAs because they usually
can find higher-paying jobs that are more related
to their academic goals, he says.
An RA’s duties include working with
residence hall officers, planning programs during
advisory board and student government meetings
and enforcing quiet hours and rules of conduct,
Romm says. They also fill out occupancy rosters
and weekly reports, and open doors for residents
locked out of their rooms
Johnson says being both a disciplinarian and
a friend is one of the hardest things about his job
"It takes someone who can stand in that gray
area. " he says. "A lot of people don't realize they
(RAs) have been on the other end of the stick.”
He adds, “Some people think that RAs are
superhuman. They forget that they have feelings
and problems, too."
It is frustrating to deal with troublemakers
who come in from other halls, Leith says. Because
she is not their RA, they think they have no
reason to listen to her, she says.
"Sometimes it's hard because I don't feel like
I have to be a policeman and patrol the halls,"
Leith says.
But she says that by the year’s end, she will
be much more independent and organized. "I'd
like to feel like I made a difference in people's
lives," she says. "I'd like to leave here knowing
that I did a good job and that I did the best I
could."
