Man admits to spying
MANAGUA, Nicaragua (AP)
— An American said to be the
brother of a U.S. congressman
was arrested at an air base and
told authorities he worked for a
group specializing in military
espionage, Nicaragua's govern
ment said Sunday.
The leftist Sandinista govern
ment identified the man as Sam
Nesley Hall and said his case
would be treated like that of
U.S. mercenary Eugene
Hasenfus.
Officials said that when Hall
was arrested, at 10 a.m. Friday
at Punta Huete air force base,
about 13 miles northeast of
Managua, he was carrying maps
and sketches of military targets
stuffed in his shoes.
Reports in the United States
said Hall, 49, is the brother of
Rep. Tony P. Hall. D-Ohio, and
is himself a former Ohio state
legislator and a onetime Olym
pic diving medalist.
Marcos wants to go home
MANILA, Philippines (AP) —
Ex-President Ferdinand Marcos
told Filipinos on Sunday he
hopes “a miracle" will bring
him home for Christmas, and
authorities said the airport in
his provincial stronghold is
closed to private traffic.
About 1,000 supporters of the
ousted president rallied in
Manila to denounce President
Corazon Aquino's government
and her cease-fire with com
munist rebels.
During the rally, a speaker an
nounced the death Sunday of
Marcos' sister, Elizabeth
Marcos-Keon. The Marcos fami
ly chaplain Rev. Domingo
Nievres said she died of heart
failure.

Dole wants new adviser
WASHINGTON (AP) —
Senate Republican leader Bob
Dole urged President Reagan on
Sunday to let someone other
than chief of staff Donald Regan
advise him on the Iran-Contra
affair.
The pressure on Reagan to act
more decisively in the crisis
came amid reports that fired
White House aide Lt. Col.
Oliver North helped a conser
vative group’s advertising cam
paign to gain support for
Reagan's Nicaragua policy and
target members of Congress on
the Contra aid issue.
While others on Capital Hill
have called for Regan's ouster.
Dole recommended that former
Sen. Howard Baker of Ten
nessee or another respected
lawyer be appointed as White
House chief of staff on the Iran
Contra issue.

Bridge opening delayed
NORTH BEND (AP) -
Reopening of the McCullough
Bridge over Coos Bay has been
delayed until noon Tuesday, a
state Highway Division
spokesman says.
The division planned to
reopen the bridge Monday mor
ning but temporary repairs to
the mile-long span have taken
longer than expected, John
Elliott, division spokesman,
said Sunday.
The agency closed the bridge
Dec. 4 after It was struck by a
freight ship, forcing traffic on
U.S. 101 to take a 15-mile
detour. The bridgo normally
carries the U.S. 101 traffic.
