Oregon hosts Lamar, looks for consistency
By Capi Lynn
Of Ml* KawraM
Coach Don Monson and the
Oregon men’s basketball team
hope to carry some consistency
from Saturday's victory over
Weber State University into
McArthur Court tonight.
The Ducks. 2-2. host Umar
University for a 7:35 p.m. non
conference contest, their third
consecutive home game.
But Oregon will definitely be
put to the test against a squad
that Monson calls "the best ball
club we've faced so far.”
"They (Umar) have good
athletes and a lot of team
quickness.” Monson said.
Monson pointed out the
strength of Umar's James
Gulley, a 6-foot-B. 255-pound
junior post, and the outside
shooting of DeWayne Brown, a
6-foot-4 senior guard.
Gulley, a returning starter for
the Wildcats, averaged 12.9
points and 5.7 rebounds a game
a year ago although he missed
nine mid-season games with a
ruptured back disc.
In just three games this
season. Gulley has poured in
24.5 points a contest and pulled
down 12.5 rebounds, con
tributing heavily to Lamar's 2-1
start.
“We’ve got a lot of defenses
ready, but which one to ure.
we’re not sure,” Monson said of
how the Ducks will counter
Gulley's formidable presence
underneath the basket.
"Hopefully we'll find one that
will neutralize him (Gulley)."
The Ducks have outrebound
ed their opponents 137-112. but
the Wildcats look to make
things a bit more difficult,
especially with the muscle of
Gulley.
However. Monson feels his
team is doing what it needs to in
the rebounding department
"Rebounding is reacting to
the ball, blocking out and hustl
ing after the ball, and we've
been doing pretty good so far."
Monson said.
Veteran guards Brown and
Danny Gauthier have replaced
the other two regulars, in
cluding 30-game starter James
Nance, who averaged 12.6
points a game last season.
Brown is I Omar’s second
leading scorer so far this season,
averaging 18 points a game.
The Ducks are led by junior
guard Anthony Taylor, who is
averaging 21.8 points a game
He had his best game of the
season Saturday, scoring 29
points on 14 of 22 from the
field.
Center Sven Meyer is con
tributing 15.5 points a game for
Oregon, as well as pulling
down nine boards a contest.
Two Oregon volleyball
players and firs!-year coach
( Jerry Gregory were honored by
the Collegiate Volleyball
Coaches Association Monday.
Junior co-captain Teri
Kramer, the Ducks' number-one
hitter, was selected to the Nor
thwest All-Region first team,
while freshman hitter Michele
Krebsbach received second
team honors.
Both hitters led the Ducks' of
fensive attack all season and
were earlier awarded Pacific-10
Conference honors (both were
second-team selections).
Kramer drilled 703 total kills
on the year, six more than her
last two seasons combined, to
set an Oregon single-season
record, and Krebsbach finished
the season with 590 kills, the
most by any freshman in
Oregon volleyball history.
Head coach Gregory, who
guided the team to a 22-12
overall record and the Ducks’
second NCAA tournament ever,
was also named Northwest
Region Coach of the Year.
