Ducks play in-state teams; try to clinch NCAA bid

With the NCAA tournament just around the comer,
the Oregon volleyball team wraps up Its regular season
schedule this weekend with its final conference match
and the Oregon Challenge Cup tournament.
The Ducks conclude their PacificrlO Conference slate
tonight in search of their first 20-win season since 1984
(27-12). when they travel to Corvallis for a Civil War
volleyball tilt with Oregon State University at CHI Col
iseum. Match time is 7:30 p.m.
Oregon cast a total team effort and easily disposed of
the Beavers in the first round of conference play 15-4.
15-7. 15-6. holding OSU to a meager .009 hitting
percentage.
"The match we played (earlier this season) was the
first time Carol Sears (OSU's setter) had been switcher!
to the 6-2 offense instead of the 5-1. Now she is only set
ting half the balls.” Oregon coach Gerry Gregory said.
"She's definitely their best hitter, and it (the offensive
change) definitely gives the Beavers more of an offen
sive threat.*’
OSU is 7-21 on the season and 3-14 in conference ac- •
tion and trails in the all-time series with Oregon
38-12-1.
After concluding their Pac-10 schedule, the Ducks
will face the University of Portland Saturday and either
OSU or Portland State University on Sunday in the
first-ever Oregon Challenge Cup tournament at PSU.
The Portland Pilots are 17-14 on the year and lost a
four-game match to the Ducks earlier this season at
McArthur Court, while PSU is 19-13, including a tough
five-game loss in Kugene six weeks ago after leading
two games to none.
The Ducks. 19-11 overall and 11-6 in the Pac-10.
dropped in the national rankings after a split with the
two Washington schools last weekend at home.
Oregon lost to the University of Washington for the
second time this season and rebounded against
Washington State University to maintain its fourth
place standing in the conference, although it slipped
from its 14th spot on both national polls, to 17th
(NCAA) and 16th (Tachikara/CVCA),
Ahead of the Ducks on the conference ladder are
three top-ranked ieams: UCLA (6th QR 9th). Stanford
(10th/10th) and Arizona State University {12th/
13th). .
After this weekend's action, the Ducks will eagerly
anticipate won! from the NCAA tournament selection
committee. The bid and site selections for the first
round, which takes place Dec. 4-6, will lie announced
Nov. 30. Regional action will resume Dec. 11-13. with
the Final Four scheduled for Dec:. 19-21 in Stockton,
(^alif.. at .the University of the Pacific.
