Women’s Colleges
I was glad to see your coverage of women's colleges (educa
tion! We. too, find it hard to believe that women's colleges are
an endangered species We’ve just enrolled one of our largest
classes in history, have seen our endowment triple in the past
seven years and have received 100 percent payment of our
alumnae pledges in our annual fund drive. We realize that the
success of our college will require wit and work, but we’re
excited by thequality and the diversity of the students we serve

Your article on Goucher College's decision to admit male
students because of a declining enrollment was informative
and revealing. But one point needs to be qualified. A senior
student is quoted as saying, "A lot of students and faculty were
forced to come to terms with their feminism." Wrong! What
they had to come to terms with was their sexism.

There are no "freshmen” or "upperclassmen" at Bryn Mawr
College. Linguistic equality is the first und most important step
toward actualization of women's equality in our society. One's
thoughts and actions can never be unbiased if the words one
uses are sexually discriminating.

Student Loans
1 was very disturbed by Cindy Spitzer’s "Lessons From a
Student Loan" (my ti'rni. Guaranteed-student-loan obliga
tions require mature and responsible behavior on the part of
the students. Ms. Spitz.er’s "inconveniences" seem to have been
self-in dieted and her flippant attitude toward the repayment of
her loans was annoying. Student-loan programs are not intend
ed to create a nation of professionals who will have to fall back
upon bankruptcy. 1 will soon begin repaying every cent of a
$26,775 student-loan obligation that provided me with the only
possible means to graduate from law school.

Spitzer’s "Lessons From a Student Loun” made interesting
reading. I had the same problem when my loan went into
default I madea lot of phonecalls, wrote hundreds of letters, but
neither thecal Is nor the letters helped me. After New York state
purchased the loan from my bank. 1 gave up hope and started
paying $50 a month. 1. too, should have gone to the top!
