Apartment decorating
on a shoestring budget
No one likes to come home
from classes to a dull, drab, bare
apartment. But how can a col
lege budget spruce up a room or
two? According to four local in
terior design and space plan
ners. it is not as hard as it may
seem.
Nancy Burke, owner of
Change of Scenery, a design
consultation service, works with
individuals who want to
decorate an apartment or house.
Burke offers a full-design service
including wallpaper and carpet.
Burke will “work within a
budget” to help her clients
achieve a desired look, she says.
She advises people to “comb
junk shops. Refinish, re
upholster pieces. Start with one
piece and build slowly.”
One inexpensive decorating
idea Burke suggests is using
sheets as wall hangings. It is less
expensive than paint or
wallpaper and it can lx? moved
around or taken down complete
ly whereas paint and wallpaper
are virtually permanent.
Gary Wright, store manager of
Ethan Allen Gallery, suggests
their "custom-room plan.” This
includes a maple group that has
a desk and storage cabinets with
shelves on top. The same look is
available in four different sizes;
24. 36. 42 and 48 inches wide.
Wright says "lighter colors
with maple (furniture)” help
make a room brighter and
cheerier. “The right kind of
lighting and bigger patterns in
the upholstery also help,”
Wright said .
Essential furniture includes a
bed, dresser, a sofa or chair ar
rangement. and a desk/study
area. Wright said.
Ethan Allen will do an in
home call to get a floor plan to
design a layout. They will work
with one piece at a time or a
complete room scheme.
B.J. Stoddard, who works
with residential and commercial
interior design, offers many
practical and inexpensive ideas.
Stoddard suggests an "old
standby" — wooden crates or
cement blocks for inexpensive
bookshelves.
She also mentions using
sheets as window coverings and
wall hangings. Large pillows for
seating are easy and
inexpensive.
"Use school banners hanging
from the ceiling to help perk up
a corner,’' Stoddard says.
"Graphics on the walls help a
lot.”
Stoddard primarily concen
trates on using color psychology
in designs. "Color sets moods,”
she said. "Yellows and reds are
energy or action colors while
greens and blues are more
subdued.”
Stoddard goes on to point out
that yellow is a meditation col
or; it is good for thinking and
studying. Good middle tones of
all colors go well with one
another.
Stoddard said a desk, daybed
and bookshelves are essential
pieces of furniture A good,
straight-backed chair is good for
studying, she said. "You stay
more alert" if the chair is less
than comfortable. Stoddard
said. A good lamp, large pillows
and throw rugs offer warm
touches.
George Mayer of Space Plann
ing, a Eugene interior design
company, emphasized that a
student needs a place to be alone
in an apartment or house. “A
student needs to Ire alone with
their thoughts and studies." he
says.
Mayer also points out that
plants and posters are excellent
decorating items.
"Borrow from home.” Mayer
suggests. "Bring a little of home
along with you."
