of Big Time wrestling in
Eugene:

at the Lane County Fairgrounds.
I saw the biggest display of blue
collar America since beer night
last summer at an Ems game
These. 1 thought, arc the people
who arc buying those baseball
caps at 7-Eleven.
Among those who paid $6 a
ticket for two hours of genuine
frolicking, professional
wrestling were folks of all ages.
They came to see Scott "the
Hulk" Doring, Rip Oliver, The
Arab, Mean Mike Miller and the
Assassin, among others.
Little boys were anxiously
awaiting the start of the first
bout, aspiring to kick some butt.
Alongside them were the
potbellied fathers, wishing they
still could.
Old women were looking at
their watches, and teen-age girls
were standing by the locker
room door hoping to get a
fleeting glimpse of their favorite
hulkstcr.
A younger man in his 20s
wore a gray, dingy T-shirt that
read, "Mount Saint Helens:
Ass-hole of the earth.”
Just before the 8 p.m. starting
time, excitement and tension
builds to an electric high Final
ly, the lights dim. leaving one
bright silhouette circling the red
matted ring.
Ding—ding.
Barry Owen has problems.
Owen is the promoter of Big
Time wrestling. He is a third
generation promoter, behind dad
and grandpa, who also worked
wrestling and some boxing. He
travels the Northwest circuit
with the wrestlers in a 1984
Camaro that has 130,000 miles
on it.
Wrestling is his life.
