Volleyball team whips Cal;
Stanford halts win streak
By Craig Harris
IN th* Eraaralrf
Oregon's volleyball team
received a trick the day after
Halloween, when the Stanford
Cardinal upended the Ducks in
a four-game match, snapping
their nine-game winning streak.
With the loss, the Ducks are
now 9-4 in the Pacific-10 Con
ference and locked-up with
Arizona State University for
third place.
The Cardinal upped its record
to 10-1 and now trails con
ference leader UCLA by one
half game.
Stanford buried Oregon 15-4
in game one, but the Ducks
came back in the second stanza,
winning 15-10.
In game three, Stanford pro
duced a carbon copy of the first
game, beating the Ducks handi
ly. 15-3.
"In the third game Stanford’s
offense was much quicker and it
gave our defense a lot of trou
ble,” said Oregon coach Gerry
Gregory. "We also had pro
blems receiving serves.”
That last remark was an
understatement, for the Car
dinal recorded 14 service aces,
and the Ducks had fits all night
with their return.
All-American setter Wendi
Kush and junior Teresa Smith
gave Oregon plenty of pro
blems, as Rush chalked up five
aces to go with her 54 assists,
while Smith tallied four aces
along with 15 kills
The Ducks’ one-two punch of
Michele Krebsbach and Teri
Kramer were shut down for
most of the night, as they were
held to only 11 and 16 kills,
respectively.
In the fourth game. Stanford
turned the lights out on Oregon,
winning 15-6.
Even after losing to Stanford,
ranked ninth (Tachikara QR
CVCA) and 10th (NCAA) in the
nation. Gregory was still pleas
ed with his club’s efforts.
'Tm not disappointed at all.
We’re in a tie for third with
ASU and have a good chance of
taking sole position of third. If
we have a good finish we have a
great chance to make the NCAA
tournament and host a first
round game," Gregory said
Oregon is currently fifth in
the west region, with the top
eight teams going to the na
tional tournament.
On Friday night. Oregon won
its 17th match of the year by
downing the California Golden
Bears in four games.
The ‘‘K-Combination’’ of
Krebsbach and Kramer were red
hot, slamming home 28 and 34
kills, respectively.
After the weekend. Kramer
had totaled up 557 kills for the
year, and only needs 131 to
break All-American Sue Har
bour's record which was set in
1983.
Krebsbach has slammed
down 506 kilts for the season,
the most ever as a freshman and
fourth on the list of most kills in
a year.
While Krebsbach and Kramer
were heating up Oregon’s of
fense, the rest of Harmon Gym
was deathly cold. An estimated
crowd of only 250 were in atten
dance. with 150 of those being
the Oregon Marching Band,
which was in Berkeley for the
football game.
Even though the ”K
Combination" was lighting up
the scoreboard. Oregon still had
trouble putting away the Bears.
Oregon won the first two
games 15-12, and then rallied
back in the third game only to
fall 17-15. In that third game,
the score was tied at 13. 14 and
15, before the Bears put it away.
Oregon then closed out the
match in convincing fashion,
winning game four 15-8.
Oregon will make another
road trip next weekend, when it
travels to Los Angeles to piay
the best and worst team in the
conference. Friday, the Ducks
will take on the 0-13 USC Tro
jans. and Saturday they will
play 7th- (NCAA) and 8th
(Tachikara/CVCA) ranked
UCLA.
