Oregon captured second in the tournament, but things didn't start out so bright as the team found the going a bit rough in the preliminary rounds. Oregon posted a 2-2 record for the preliminary rounds, the best they could do on a very emotionally and physically draining day. Both losses came in overtime matches. The opening round brought Oregon their first loss, a three-hour marathon won, 17-16. by nationally-ranked Stanford University, the even tual champions. It was a bitter pill for the team to swallow so early. But they rebounded with vic tories over University of California-San Diego and UC- >: Davis. Black Tide, who proved earlier in the day their ranking was no fluke by thumping Stanford, 13-6. Oregon's game with the Black Tide finished in the quickly diminishing California daylight with the Tide squeak ing out a 12-10 win. Oregon opened second-day play with a 15-10 quarterfinal victory over Oil Poly-San I.uia Obispo This moved them into the semifinals against the Black Tide of UCSB with the winner going to the finals and onto to St. I,ouis for the nationals. The wind became a major fac tor on the second day with gusts reaching 30 miles per hour. In both semifinal games, only three up-wind goals were scored, and Oregon had two of them The goals gave the Ducks a 5-3 lead over UCSH. which they never relinquished. The teams traded down-wind goals to the end. ami Oregon won 17-15. The victory earned them un automatic national berth and put them into the championship game. The finals pitted tin* Ducks against Stanford, in a repeat rf the previous year’s regional final. But, this year, Stanford took home the win, outlasting Oregon. 15-12. in a tight match. It was a hard-fought, emo tional weekend for Oregon but also extremely satisfying. They didn't succesfully defend their Western regional title but have high hopes about bringing home the national title later this month.
