Golfers finish sixth in Phoenix l By Craig Harris Of IH» Fimtald The Oregon g(*lf team made a 180-degree turn this weekend at the Sun Devil-Phoenix Thunderbird Collegiate, and it couldn't have come at a better time. After a disasterous exhibition in their last tourney, the Ducks couldn't afford a repeat per formance if they had any hopes of clinching an NCAA tournament invitation. But thanks to the last day sub-par shooting of sophomores Steve Kinloul. Croy Cochran and senior George Daves, the Ducks tied Pacific-10 Conference powerhouse CSC for sixth place. More importantly is the fact that UCl.A and San lose Slate, teams that have been chasing the • .’Ducks all year, turned in seventh and eighth place finishes The Bruins finished 10 strokes behind Oregon, while the Spartans tell by 22 strokes'. Kinloul led the Ducks with Saturday's three-. under-par HO, and went on to post a three-day ;. total of 218. Cochran wasone-urider Saturday at 7T. finishing two strokes behind Rintoul with a . Total of 220. All-American candidate Daves turn ved in: mediocre performances bn the first two days, but his 71 on Saturday brought him home ; with S 221total Rob Huff and Tony Joyner shot a C 222 and 22T' and senior Paul Weinhold. who was only four stroked behind the division leaders on day one with his own one-under 71. ballooned to scores of H2 and 70 enroute to a 229 total. By finishing ahead of UCLA and San Jose State, a national tournament bid to Winston Salem. N.C. should be forthcoming for the Ducks. The only thing that could hinder that invitation would bo a low performance in the Pac-10 Cham pionships. which began today in Thousand Oaks. Calif. That shouldn't happen though according to Oregon coach Scott Krieger. Krieger felt his squad should finish no lower that fourth and could possibly have an outside chance of winning the conference title. "I think we have a good chance at the Fac-lOs because the course is much like the ones that we play on up here./ Krieger says. He also predicted Arizona Stale University and USO to be the favorites, with Stanford. UCLA, and Oregonchallenging for the third and fourth place spots, l ie picked Oregon State. Washington and Arizona being in the middle of the pack, and California and the Cougars of Washington State University winding up in the cellar. The Pac-10 tournament will end Wednesday, and then Krieger and his troops will be waiting until Friday or Monday when official NCAA in vitations will lie issued.
