Ducks qualify at Pepsi Relays
Familiar face— Former
Oregon runner Claudette
CrtHmendaal now wears the
colors of Athletics West.
By fatten Emmons
Of I hr Kmerald
This year. the Oregon Pepsi
Relays were a smaller version of
what they have been in their
three-year history — the high
school sections, tho two-day
format and a number of relays
have been eliminated The ex
citement, however, has remain
ed, and a couple of events have
been added.
One of the additions is the
men's 800 meters race.
lose Barbosa probably ap
preciates that addition. Flis win
ning time in the 800 was
1:40.84, which is the fastest
time in the world this year and a
l.ane Community College
record for the 1984 Brazilian
Olympian.
Also thankful for a <$ood day
of running were tour -Oregon
men who qualified for the
NCAA championships to- be
held |une 4 10 in Indianapolis.
Ind. !* *
Dub Myers was the.first of tho
four to qualify, winning the
1,500 meters in 3:40.78. The
race was enhanced by* the' late’
entry of Oklahoma State's. Paul
Oirkins, the NCAA indoor-mile
champion, l^rkins decided to
race in Eugene rather than at a
meet in Witchita Kan.! because
he thought it would be .too hot
there to run well and (jinly<arriy
ed in Eugene Saturday,
afternoon,
Jerkins led from the siart .un
til 250 meters remained, 'when
Myers put ot? a big move and
passed him As Myers came
down the homestretch, I-ark ins
and Athletics West's Vince
Draddy were immediately
behind. Larkins got as close as
Myer’s shoulder, finishing se
cond in 3:40.81, with Draddy
third in 3:41.33.
"Never underestimate
anybody." Meyers said. "I was
a lot happier about this when I
knew it was going to be fast. I
got more nervous about it, To
day felt much more like a race
than most."
The men's 5,000 meters was a
race of about 13 runners to the
very end. The top 12 all broke
14 minutes and throe Ducks
qualified for NCAA*. Harold
KuphaldC Kick Hergoson and
Knut liogvoid finished fifth,
sixth and eighth in time* that
were all big improvements.
huphaldt's time of 13:40.3
was a personal best by more
than 20 seconds. Bergosen ran
13:5128. a 15-second improve
ment, and Hegvold, running his
first 5.000 in two years, improv
ed by more than 30 seconds to
13:53.58 John Strickland, who
was 13th, ran 14:10. a personal
host by 12 seconds.

Yvette llmwn won the discus
in the morning section of . the
meet with a five-foot improve
ment in her personal best to
1 tit-2; That indicates a good
chance of her reaching the
NCAA qualifying mark of
ltiH-6.
Monic a Beamier also got a big
personal best, improving in the
Javelin by 14 feet to 103-4.
Ileinonen was also pleased with
the performances of two of his
freshmen 800-meter runners.
“Francie Fame; who has been
