Byrne warns of possible “drastic changes’’ at AD
Reacting to the defeat by University of Oregon
Students of a ballot measure to appropriate an addi
tional $419,241 from student fees to fund women's
athletic programs. Director of Athletics Bill Byrne made
the following statement in response:
“Fiscal responsibility is one of the main tasks of an
athletic department. Unlike every other state .school in
the Pacific-10 Conference. Oregon assd Oregon State
receive no state funding. The only source of income are
gate receipts, contributions and student fees. In the
past, football and men's basketball have carried the
complete financial burden of all 16 sports at Oregon.
The 66 percent increase in Pac-10 guarantees adds to
our fiscal problems and leaves us fewer resources to
fund our athletic programs.
‘ The University of Oregon athletic department is
anticipating a $400,000 shortfall in estimated income
for the 1986-87 academic year. To remedy that, a pro
posal was put forward to the students of the University
to increase student fees by more than $400,000 to fund
women's sports. The proposal was defeated and it may
create drastic changes in the University of Oregon
athletic program.
“Currently, budget proposals are being analy/.ed
and recommendations will be going forth to the Univer
sity administration to change the makeup of the depart
ment. These proposals could include, but are not
limited to. reductions in grant-in-aid, reductions in
travel, increase in ticket prices and reductions iii ad
ministrative personnel and the number of teams
representing the University of Oregon.”
Byrne was not available for further comment
because he is at the Pac-10 Conference meetings thru
Wednesday.
When he returns. Byrne will sit down with Dan
Williams, vice president for administration in charge of
athletics, to discuss what, if any, steps will 1h> taken to
solve the shortfall problem.
