Duck women leash the Huskies
By Robert Collias

The Oregon women's track
team put a leash on the Univer
sity of Washington Huskies
with a 84Vi-51 Va dual-meet vic
tory that ran the Ducks winning
streak to 20. The meet was not
an easy one for coach Tom
Heinonen and his troops,
however.
A resounding chorus of
jackhammers greeted the Ducks
for the first two hours of the
meet as construction was occur
ing at Husky Stadium, but
Heinonen was not too upset.
“1 guess the jackhammers
were even for everybody,"
Heinonen said. ‘‘Seriously
though, we wanted to slide,
through this meet, and we end
ed up having to run some.peo
ple in their best events, and go a
little harder than we wanted
to."
The Ducks had some stellar
performances in the field as
they left most of their top
distance runners home.
lanell Thorsiand continues to
show the promise that she
displayed two years ago as a
freshman, winning the long
jump at 19-10V«, and the high
hurdles in 14.32.
"Thorsiand is ready to
become our first 20-foot long
jumper any day now"'
Heinonen said.
Yvette Brown continued- to
improve as she won the discus
at 156-5 to go.along with a third
in the shot put.
lleinonen was pleased with
the 400-meter relay that won in
48.64.
"Best of all we put together a
decent 400 relay for the first
time this year,” Heinonen said.
"With a couple of good hand
offs we could get the school
record (48.28), and possibly
break 46 seconds.”
The Ducks must now ready
themselves for a showdown
with Brigham Young Uinversity
and the Uinversity of California
this weekend.
Oregon has never lost to
either team in three meetings,
but Heinonen is still Concerned.
"Brigham Young is tough,
they, might be better than
Washington Slate (a team the
Ducks beat 70-65 last week),”
Heinonen said. "California
doesn't have much depth, but
they have some great athletes.”

The Oregon men’s tennis team brought home
a pair of victories as they swept past the Universi
ty of Idaho and Boise State University Saturday in
the Washington team championships, this -
weekend.
The Ducks beat Idaho.'8-1. and Boise State. -
6-3. after losing to Pacific. Lutheran ^University,
6-3. Oregon's season record for collegiate mat- .
ches now stands at 12-9.
Freshman Lee Galway went undefeated in his
three singles matches on the weekend, raising his
season record to 15-6.
Coach Buzz Summers felt the team played
very well against Boise State.
‘It was a good showing on our part since we
lost 8-1. the first time we played them,” he said.
Sophomores Sean Campbell and Chris
Brilhante played exceptionally well, especially
against Boise State, according to Summers. Both
players won three-set matches against BSU.
Idaho was the weak team in the tournament
and the. Ducks had no trouble swamping them.
The Ducks face Portland State University
here today at 3 p.m. and then are off to Salem on
Tuesday to play Willamette University. Summers
is picking Oregon to win both matches.
“We are trying to aim for 20 wins this season,
and are at 19 now so maybe we can get over the
hump this week.” Summers said.
Oregon pitcher Pat Marsh throws some heat Sunday as the
club baselmll team swept a doubleheader from the Pacific
I V 's 6-4. and tl-9.
Marsh pitched the first game as the Ducks improved their
record to 4-9 on the season.
The team will be in action Friday at 2:30 p.m. against the
Oregon Institute of Technology at Howe Field.
