San Francisco still unbeaten in preseason

The last throw Tom Filer made
Wednesday was his glove — into the
Toronto dugout. It may be the last thing
the young Toronto pitcher throws for
awhile.
Filer. 7-0 in 11 games last year with the
Blue Jays before a tender elbow put him
on the disabled list three times, was call
ed out of the bullpen to start the fourth in
ning against the New York Mets. his first
appearance of the spring. Two batters
later, he was gone.
One inning later, so were the Blue fays.
Two-run singles by Darryl Strawberry and
Gary Carter in the fifth put the Mets
ahead. 5-1, and they held on to beat the
Blue Jays, 5-3.
Filer had no trouble with the first two
batters he faced, but after one pitch to
Danny Heep. he turned and walked de
jectedly from the mound. Assistant
trainer Tommy Craig and manager Jimy
Williams met Filer as he crossed the
third-base line and. after a brief discus
sion. the pitcher flung his glove into the
dugout.
Trainer Ken Carson said the injury ap
peared to be of a “muscular” nature.
meaning Filer had either pulled or strain
ed a muscle, and that it didn't appear to
be a recurrence of last year's elbow pro
blems. Filer wasn't as optimistic.
“Everything feels the same as it did last
year.” he said. “1 just had a feeling com
ing out of the bullpen that something
wasn't right. Then, when I got in the
game and started throwing game-speed. 1
could feel a twinge.”
Elsewhere. Frank White drove in three
runs with a triple, homer and single, and
Jamie Quirk singled home the winning
run with two outs in the ninth inning as
the Kansas City Royals beat the Baltimore
Orioles 6-5 for their first triumph in four
exhibition games.
Jeff Leonard drove in five runs with a
homer and a double as San Francisco bat
tered the Seattle Mariners. 13-2. for their
sixth straight win against no losses. Scott
Garrelts. a National League All-Star who
is being switched from the bullpen to a
starting role, pitched the first four innings
for the Giants, allowing one run on four
hits.
Joaquin Andujar. a late-season flop for
the St. Louis Cardinals, made his pitching
debut with the Oakland A’s and worked
three perfect innings in an 8-2 victory
over San Diego Padres.
Mike Diaz doubled home two runs to
cap a four-run ninth inning that carried
the Pittsburgh Pirates to their first spring
victory, an 8-4 decision over the
Cardinals.
Mark Davidson hit a grand-slam homer
and Kent Hrbek added a two-run shot to
power the Minnesota Twins over the
Houston Astros. 7-4. Hrbek's homer came
off of Nolan Ryan.
Bruce Hurst became the first Boston pit
cher to go four innings and the Red Sox
scored three early runs to defeat a Detroit
Tigers split squad. 3-2. Hurst allowed
three hits and one run.
Scott Madison doubled twice as the rest
of the Tigers scored eight runs in the
ninth inning to defeat the Philadelphia
Phillies. 8-2.
Tracy Jones had two RBI doubles as the
Cincinnati Reds trounced the Chicago
White Sox 8-2.
Joe Carter's RBI single with two outs in
the bottom of the 10th inning gave the
Cleveland Indians an 11-10 victory over
the Milwaukee Brewers.
Oregon’s senior center,
8-foot-a Jerr*' Adams, was
chosen the Pacific-10 Con
ference player of the week for
his outstanding performances
in two Oregon wins over USC
and UCLA this week. Adams
scored 35 points and grabbed 25
rebounds in the Ducks only
Pac-10 sweep of the season.
The Oregon basketball team
held their annual basketball
banquet Monday night and
again Adams was the big win
ner. He won the team's most
valuable player award, while
Kenny Sprague was selected
most inspirational player, and
Keith Bladerston was presented
with the C^arl Creve Award as
the top player in athletic and
scholastic acheivement.

Pac tennis player of the week for
winning her match against
Idaho's Pam Waller. Crall
defeated Waller. 4-6, 8-4, 8-4. to
give the Ducks the deciding
match in a 5-4 win over Idaho
