Training -
them than th«ir independence
and the self confidence that
goes with it."
The students take their job
very seriously and are hard
workers, she says.
"There is little talking going
on during work and they often
come back before their break is
over." she says. "For some, this
job could be the highlight of
their day — maybe their life,
because there’s not much going
on out there."
Developing good workers and
placing them in jobs is the goal
of a similar program on campus
run by Marty Sheehan from the
bane (education Service District
office. He supervises a high
school program for the training
of students with more severe
problems. His students work In
The Skylight and The Fishbowl
in the KMU preparing foods,
busing tables and washing
dishes.
“Appropriate access to transi
t ion skills leads to future
employment," Sheehan says.
"From here we spread to the
community.”
Eleven of fit) students in the
total high school program are at
the University. In the last five
years, 38 studenls graduated
from the program.
"Twelve of them are in work
activity day cente , five are in
community suppo ed jobs, one
moved away, one was institu
tionalized. and 17 are sitting at
home,” Sheehan says.
Finding them jobs has been a
problem for Sheehan because of
a bad economy, he says. Many
of his students need support
from staff at Adult and Family
Services, yet that budget for the
staff had been cut. in addition,
people had been hanging on to
entry level positions that his
students would otherwise work
into, he says.
But things are looking better
for Sheehan.
"I'm still saying we’re too
new. The proof is in the pud
ding this year. The following
years have been catch-up,” he
says. Better training programs,
an active economy and more
money for Adult Services gives
him an optimistic outlook.
His students are highly
motivated, there are tax incen
tives to hire them, and there is
support staff if needed, he says.
