    Duck coach resigns
(AP) — Dave Walker, a
linebacker coach at Oregon for
•lx years, has resigned in what
is expected to be the first in a
series of changes that will result
in a new defensive coordinator
for head coach Rich Brooks.
Joe Schaffeld, who has been
defensive coordinator the past
three seasons, will reportedly
remain on Brooks’ staff but will
return to his former duties as
defensive line coach. The
Register'Guard newspaper said.
Walker said Wednesday that
Brooks “feels a change has to be
made defensively as it was of
fensively three years ago."
The Oregon Ducks' defense
ranked 10th in the Pacific 10
Conference this season.
Three years ago, after Oregon
had ranked last in the Pac-10 in
total offense two straight years.
Brooks fired offensive coor
dinator Erik W id mark and hired
Bob Toledo. This season, the
Ducks had one of their most
productive offenses ever.
Walker, who played football
at Oregon, has coached outside
linebackers since Joining
Brooks' staff in 1980. He served
as a graduate assistant coach at
Washington, UCLA and
Brigham Young before getting
his first full-time fob at
Washington State. t
Yanks, White Sox deal
SAN DIEGO (AP)—The New
York Yankees end Chicago
White Sox settled for second
best. swapping pitchers when
they really wanted to trade hit
ters, as the official portion of
baseball's annual winter
meetings came to a close
Thursday.
The trade that the two clubs
made sent left-hander Britt
Bums and two minor leaguers
to the Yankees for right-hander
joe Cowley and catcher Ron
Hassey.
The trade the Yankees and
White Sox might yet make
would send free-agent catcher
Carlton Fisk to the Yankees for
designated hitter Don Baylor.
The deal was the 11th at these
meetings, involving 25 major
league players.
Before making the second
deal with New York, the White
Sox must first sign Fisk, and
bath players are demanding
bonuses for waiving no-trade
rights. Agent Jerry Kapstein.
who represents each, said
Thursday that neither has yet
given assurances these rights
will be waived.
Though neither club would
confirm that the Fisk-Baylor
deal would be made. White Sox
Genera) Manager Ken Harrelson
said. "It's Kapstein's party
now. You have to follow his
lead, and that's what we’re
doing.”
Kapstein said "nothing is im
minent" with Fisk.
Burns, a 26-year-old left
hander, was 18-11 with a 3.96
ERA last year for the White Sox,
from whom he had asked to be
traded. An earlier trade with
Atlanta for Bums had fallen
through. Bums broke in with
the White Sox in 1979 and has
spent the past 6 1-2 seasons
with the club.
Cowley, a 27-year-old right
hander, was 12-6 with a 3.95
ERA. making 26 of his 30 ap
pearances as a starter. Cowley
was signed as a free agent by the
Yankees on Oct. 20. 1983.
Hassey, 32. hit .296 for the
Yankees last season with 42 RBI
and 13 home runs in 267 at
bats. A left-handed hitter,
Hassey was platooned at catcher
for much of the season with
Butch Wynegar, who is a free
agent.
The only catchers left now on
New York's roster who have
major league experience are
second-year player Scott
Bradley and Juan Espino.
"We have plans to take care
of our catching needs, and
we’re not concerned about it,"
Yankees Manager Lou Pinielia
said, indicating a Fisk deal
could be made soon.
Viking netter honored
PORTLAND! AP) — Lynda
Johnson of Portland State was
named the NCAA Division II
volleyball player of the year
Thursday night.
Johnson also was named to
the NCAA Division II all
America team for the fourth
year in a row. The awards were
announced at a banquet
preceding this weekend's Divi
sion II volleyball Final Four
competition.
Also named to the all
America squad were l.isa Couch
of Portland State. Heather
Hafner and Shell! Mosby of C.al
State-Northridge. Bonnie Beard
of Sam Houston State and Clara
Pierema of Cal Poly-Pomona.
Named to the second team
were Theresa Huitinga of
Portland State, janice Louie and
janice Star of Cal State
Sacramento, Terri Dantuma of
Cal Poly Pomona. Annie Knise
of Cal-Riverside and Patty Theis
of Ferris State.
Defending champion
Portland State is serving as host
of the Final Four for the second
straight year.
Cal Stete-Northridge. last
year's runnerup and the na
tional champion in 1983 and
84. takes a 26-9 record into Fri
day night's semifinals against
Nebaraska-Omaha. 41-6.
Portland State, 34-5, plays Sam
Houston State. 45-6, in the se
cond semifinal contest.
The third-place and cham
pionship matches are scheduled
for Saturday.
