Goldschmidt says
no debate until
after May primary
PORTLAND (AP) -
Democratic gubernatorial can
didate Nell Goldschmidt flaty
refused on Tuesday to debate
his Republican challenger until
after the May primary in
Oregon.
Goldschmidt told reporters in
Oregon City that "us folks that
are running in my primary are
going to have to deal with one
another before 1 get to deal with
somebody in another primary."
Former secretary of state Nor
ma Paulus had challenged
Goldschmidt to a debate when
she formally announced her
Republican bid for the gover
nor's office on Oct. 28.
Goldschmidt said, "I’ve got
to get threugh my primary first
and ! think it’s very important
that this election gives the folks
in each of the parties a chance to
build a platform .’’
Paulus, campaigning in
Portland on Tuesday, said she
was disappointed that a debate
would have to wait until after
the primary.
"Everywhere I go. all kinds of
organizations ask for It," Paulus
said. "I think the public wants
it and I’m ready to provide it
and I'm sorry that he isn’t."
Oakridge sawmill
still to be closed
in mid-December

plans to shut down its Oakridge
sawmill around the middle of
December.
"It wasn't very productive.”
Bennie Youngren. first vice
president of International
Woodworkers of America local
3-246, said of Monday's
meeting between the union and
John Wold, the company's
director of human relations.
Youngren said the company
official "pretty much told us the
same things" that were in a let
ter announcing plans to close
the mill.
Pope ft Talbot announced
Nov. 6 that the sawmill, which
is the Oakridge-Wostfir com
munity’s only major employer,
would be closed on or about
Dec. 13 The company said it
lost $2 million on the mill last
year and had lost $13.3 million
over the last decade.
Wold said before Monday's
meeting that Pope ft Talbot was
open to "creative suggestions"
for cutting operating losses at
the mill.
Union officials, however,
went to Monday's meeting with
no offer in hand and came away
reporting no change in the com
pany's intention to pull out of
Oakridge.
The 1WA local represents
woods crews at Oakridge. No
meeting had been set with of
ficials of the Lumber and
Sawmill Workers Union local
that represents mill workers.
A union official said the com
pany may be threatening to
close the mill to gain wage and
benefit concessions, and said
workers would oppose such
concessions.
