Blazers reign over Kings

Luiz de Oliveira, a coach for the
Athletics West track team, says he has
been fired by Nike Inc., owner of the
dub.
De Oliveira coached world-class run
ners Mary Slaney and Joaquim Cruz,
both members of the Eugene-based team.
Ian Campbell, director of athletics for
Nike, said the Beaverton sports shoe
company and de Oliveira failed to come
to terms on a new contract. The coach
said he considered himself fired.
De Oliveira. 36. a Brazilian native who
began working for Nike in 1981. said he
was paid $35,000 annually in a contract
that expired last July. He said he wanted
a $5,000 raise plus incentive bonuses
should his athletes win future Olympic
or World Championship gold medals or
set world records at Olympic distances.
Campbell said de Oliveira s position
will not be replaced but that the jobs of
the three other Athletics West coaches.

Former players of the Portland
Breakers should share some of the blame
for the team’s demise in the* United
Stains Football league, team owner )oe
Canizaro said Monday.
Ganizaro said the club, which has
neither players nor coaches, will not pay
a total debt of $5 million until its assets
are realized.
The Breakers, who finished 6-12 last
spring, owe their former players about
$1.4 million for the final four games of
the 1HB5 USFL season.
The USFL Flayers Association has fil
ed a lawsuit against the Breakers and the
league for the back pay.
The Portland team granted its players
free agency after the season and reached
a contract settlement with its coaches.
The Denver Gold franchise is expected to
replace the Breakers in Portland next
fall.

players) are disappointed with the way I
handled things," the businessman told
the The Oregonian newspaper. "I'm a
little disappointed in the way the club
performed .. I put a lot of money in that
football team to try to assure them of the
talent and the people necessary to ac
complish the job." Ganizaro added.
