Experimental course’s
guest lecturers attend
classes over the phone

The slogan, "Reach out and touch Homeone,” rings true
for a University journalism class where guest editors and
writers hundreds of miles away address students with the
help of a conference telephone.
Introduction to Magazine Is on experimental class now in
its second year that focuses on the effect of magazines on
society, says Ken Metzler, a journalism profossor who teaches
the course.
Guest lecturers who are unable to come in person talk to
the class of about 140 students via long distance telephone
hook-up A microphone, placed in the center aisle, allows
every student the opportunity to ask questions of the
speakers.
The informal exchange between the guest speaker and
Metzler offsets the speaker's absence. And key points are
summarized so they are not lost during the dialogue, Metzler
says,
"The students enjoy being pioneers." he says. They find
the informality and the uniqueness of the setup appealing.
"I like the class and wish that I had taken it earlier." says
Kathryn Bourn, a prejournalism major.
"It focuses on the business end of magazines and pro
vides a good background for magazine editing.” she says.
Some students seam surprised, however, by the types of
magazine professionals that are available to speak. But
Metzler is quick to point out that many magazine personnel
are very willing to participate.
"There isn't anyone who you can't talk to." Metzler
says. "We always have one or two famous names, artd if the
names aren't familiar then their magazines are." .
Some students think that speaking with well-known
names, over the phone Is less intimidating than talking to',
them in person. Metzler adds.

The format of the class often'.revolves around the
availability and the schedule .of. the speaker. And Metzler .'
says.be often must make last minute decisions.and.changes.
Class scheduling is often chaotic because the "celebrity" ••
is available only at. certain times. Metzler says. ' •
The-magazine class was established through proceeds
from the Richard W.. (ohnston Memorial Fund to introduce,
students to the world of magazine production, publication,
advertising and.distribution. ' •
