Netters sweep FSU and Notre Dame, stand in first
By Capi Lynn
Of the bmtld
Oregon’s volleyball team boosted its
NorPac Conference record to 4-0 and im
proved its season mark to 10-14 as it col
lected two impressive victories over the
weekend.
The Ducks continued their winning
ways in conference play as they downed
Fresno State University Friday night at
McAurthur Court 15-12, 15-8. 12-15,
15-4 in front of a large home crowd.
The victory was an important one for
the Ducks as it forced them into a tie for
the conference lead with San Jose State
University.
Oregon fans saw the Ducks burst out to
a 4-0 lead in the opening game before the
(
Ten Kramer
Bulldogs began to slowly, but surely
creep up on the hosts.
In no time at all, Oregon found itself
trailing 8-11, and head coach Chris
Voeiz signalled for a timeout.
The Ducks immediately jumped on the
Bulldogs and forced an FSU turnover,
following the timeout.
With Tina Adolph serving and Sue
Harbour and Teri Kramer connecting on
a couple of crucial kill points, the Ducks
roared to an 11-11 deadlock.
Oregon allowed Fresno State only one
more point on the scoreboard after that,
while it stomped on to victory.
The Ducks controlled basically the en
tire second game after surging out to a
9-1 lead. The Bulldogs did manage to cut
the distance, but to no avail.
Game three went to Fresno State after a
constant back and forth battle between
both teams, but nevertheless the Ducks
owned game four and the match.
Harbour and Kramer each hammered
out 16 kills to lead the Ducks over the
Bulldogs, while Shaunna Koenig and
Heidi Eakin added 10 and eight kills
respectively to round off the balanced
attack.
“Kramer had an outstanding offensive
match,” Chris Voeiz said “And Eakin
stepped in to play at middle for the first
time and filled the gap nicely." '
Voeiz was forced to place Eakin in the
middle position because Denise Kuhn, a
freshman starter, had been sidelined
with a back injury.
Voeiz obviously wasn't disappointed
with Eakin's performance; as the
5-foot-9-inch junior stepped in and serv
ed three aces, to go with her eight kills,
and recorded a hitting percentage of
.412.
Despite the victory. Voeiz is still hop
ing to eliminate some of her team's
inconsistency.
‘'We’re going to have to get rid of the
slumps and play with more intensity for
a longer period of time,” Voelz said.
Adolph, a freshman setter, also had u
fine match against the Bulldogs as she
tallied 43 assists on the night.
The Ducks performed well on the
defensive end as well according to
Voelz.
"The team had some great moments of
defense and that included everyone."
she said.
Oregon crusher! visiting Notre Dame
15-8. 15-9, 15-8 Sunday night to make it
a clean sweep of wins for the weekend.
"We weren't forced into the tempo we
had against Fresno State, so it was a
slower match for us," Voelz said.
"Fresno had forced us into a much faster
pace Friday."
Sophomore Teri Kramer was again a
dominant force in the Ducks’ attack,
dishing out 12 kills; as.the Oregon nat
ters rolled to victory. Kramer was averag
ing 4.3 kills per game in NorPac matches
and 3.3 in all matches prior to the Noire
Dame contest.
Koenig added Tl kills and Harbour
contributed nine kills to support
Kramer's performance.
"Koenig and Kramer both had some
good play for us." Voelz said. "Harbour
also had a good blocking match and
Monica Camp did well defensively and
passed well."
Due to the Ducks' ability to control the
entire match against the Fighting Irish,
Voelz was able to get everyone on her
squad into the lineup.
Following the Notre Dame match, the
natters were forced to cut their victory
celebration a little short after receiving
the news that Voelz would make the
1985-86 volleyball season her last.
= Chris Voelz
Many, tears were wept as Voelz an
nounced! that she had accepted the
Associate Athletic.Director position here
at the University and would resign as
head volleyball coach. ■ . ‘
Voelz wanted to inform her team now.
to enable her to.get started on the tusk of .
finding a"replacement.
Oregon will resume NorPac action
later this week when it visits the Univer- '
sity of'Califomia-Berkeley Friday and
San Jose State University Saturday.
Not only .will the Ducks be putting
their undefeated conference record on
the line, but the conference lead will be
at slake when it encounters fourth
