    Handel birthday concert slated
‘Will Rogers’ U.S.A.’
James Whitmore brings the homespun humor and
commentary of Will Rogers to Eugene tonight when he
presents “Will Rogers’ U.S.A.” in the Silva Concert
Hall of the Hult Center at 8 p.m.
Tickets are $18 and $14 and are available at all
Hult Center ticket outlets.
This year marks the 300th an
niversary of composer George
Handel’s birth, and the Oregon
Mozart Players will mark the oc
casion and conclude their
1984-85 season with a concert
devoted entirely to Handel’s
music Saturday at 8:30 p.m. in
the Hult Center’s Soreng
Theatre.
The players will perform
under the direction of Robert
Hurwitz, University music pro
fessor. The concert will feature
soloists Cherine Bauer,
soprano: Kenneth Jones, tenor
and music school graduate
teaching fellow; and the Eugene
Chamber Singers, under the
direction of James Miller, for
the “Ode for Saint Cecilia’s
Day.”
Composed in 1739 on a text
by John Dryden, the work
honors the Roman martyr
Cecilia who became the patron
saint of music in the 14th or
15th century and whose feast
day is November 22. The score
contains some of Handel’s most
exciting choral and solo writing
and reminds the listener of
“Messiah,” which the com
poser completed two years
later.
The program will open with a
suite from one of Handel’s best
loved works, the “Water
Music.” The entire “Water
Music” is a set of 21 pieces,
many of which were written
between 1715 and 1720.
Tickets for the concert, priced
at $8.50, $6.50 and $6. are
available from the Hult Center
box office. Call 687-5000 for in
formation or reservations.
