For the second year in a row, however, protesters were on hand at the Hult Center for the Performing Arts to attack the political philosophy of the com mencement speaker. About 12 anti-apartheid demonstrators brought banners inside the Silva Concert Hall in what was meant to be a silent denunciation of Attorney General Dave Frohnmayer’s position on divestiture of state funds invested in South Africa. Last year, about 100 anti abortion protesters picketed the appearance of IJ.S. Supreme Court Justice Harry Blackmun, the author of the 1973 Supreme Court decision upholding a woman's right to have an abortion. Bell was saluted by speakers as a man of principle and courage who loved his students. Bell, who became dean in 1981, leaves the position at the end of June after a dispute with some of the law school faculty over the hiring of a minority can didate. He has been asked to stay at the University as a full professor of law. Speaking before a crowd of 149 Law School graduates and about 1,100 guests, Edward Clark Jr., president of the Oregon State Bar, said the students of the school's class of 1983 "have been marked by Dean Bell's idealism. That’s a burden you'll carry with you throughout your career, and I can tell you that in some cases, that burden will be onerous.” University President Paul Olum, noting that he was pro vost when Bell was hired, said, “It was, in my judgment, one of the most important appoint ments — and certainly the most fortunate — that this university has been able to make." Dean-designate Fredric Mer rill announced that a scholar ship for minority law students will be renamed to honor Bell for his contributions to civil rights. Professor forms foolproof testing NORMAL, III. (AP) — Multiple-choice tests are: (a) really multiple guess, (b) a good way to teach wrong answers, (c) unfair to bright students, (d) easy for teachers to grade, or, (e) all the above. Illinois State University geography Professor Paul Anderson says the answer is (e), so he has invented a new multiple-choice test form. He calls his copyright exam, which can be scored by computer, the Multi-Digit Test. In it, a student must pick the correct answer to each question from a single list of up to 999 choices. Anderson said his test is adaptable to any subject in which an objective test is sought. His form is being used in music, home economics, history anti English depart ments at ISU and is being of fered to colleges anil high schools nationwide. Recycle This Paper
