Street Faire, Canoe Fete
top Mayfest’s list of events
Whatever your pleasure, as long as its not
sitting in class, you’ll find it during this
weekend's Mayfest.
Today
The Black Student Union will host
Hayward Coleman, a mime and comedy
acrobatics performer, in a free show at the Con
don School gym at 8 p.m. This is the last day
to check out the BSU-sponsored Art Show,
7:30 a m. to 3 p.m., Room 167 EMU.
The ASUO is sponsoring the annual Street
Faire. Merchants begin peddling their wares
along East 13th Avenue at 10 a.m. and will
close up at 5 p.m. The faire will continue
through tomorrow.
The Cultural Forum will present Willy
Dee, performing blues, jazz and funk at the
Noon Gig, EMU Courtyard. Following the con
cert, SURC sponsors the Student Showcase
featuring the University Song and Dance
Troupe at 1 p.m., Tae Kwon Do at 1:30 and the
B.A. Quartet at 2 p.m.
Friday
For one day only, the beer gardens will be
moved out of the crowded cafeteria and onto
the EMU East lawn. Live music from blues
band Watermelon Slim and the LeRoi Brothers
from Austin, Texas will highlight the event.
Identification will be checked.
If you don’t have ID or prefer non
alcoholic “mocktails” to beer, the residence
halls are sponoring “Music and Mocktails,”
5-8 p.m., EMU Skylight Refectory. Resident
assistants will be serving the beverages during
this free event.
The 15th Annual Willamette Valley Folk
Festival opens at 8 p.m. following the beer
gardens on the EMU East Lawn. (See related
story page 11B) Music lasts until 10 p.m.
A BSU-sponsored fashion show will begin
at 7:30 p.m. in the Gerlinger Alumni Lounge.
Saturday
The Willamette Valley Folk Festival con
tinues from noon to 10 p.m. The BSU will
sponsor an outdoor “Gospel, Jazz and Funk
Festival” at 5 p.m. in the EMU Courtyard.
“Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow,” will
be the theme of the annual Canoe Fete, a
parade of canoe-based floats on the Mill Race.
The SURC-sponsored event begins at 2 p.m.
Winning floats and the Mystery Duck will be
announced immediately following the parade.
Sunday
This is the final day for the Willamette
Valley Folk Festival. The Robert Cray Band
will provide the festival’s climax at 8 p.m.
with it own distinctive brand of rhythm and
blues.

Tho Junction City historic museum will be
open special hours during the festival. A beer
garden (Ol Haven) also will be a daily attraction.
The Scandia Run, a 10-kilometer race, will be
run in conjunction with the festival.
"Ninety percent of the churches and mer
chants in the city contribute to the festival." says
Linda Fischer, festival publicity director. "We
really have a community event here.”
The Scandinavian Festival was founded in
1900 by Junction City physician Gale Fletchall.
Interstate 5 had recently opened five miles to the
east, taking away much of the thru traffic that had
passed through the town on Highway 99. Flet
chall recognized a need to revitalize the town’s
rapidly-sagging economy, and he thought that
there could be no better way than to have a tradi
tional , annual community event celebrating Junc
tion City’s strong Scandinavian heritage.
"We wanted to have something our city
could be proud of," says Fletchall. "I think we
have accomplished that in our festival.”
