The first excitement of the
weekend for the Duck squad
came early Saturday as the
men’s novice/frosh 4 took se
cond in their heat, edging out
the University of Washington.
The cheery young lads toasted
their accomplishment with
yells of exaltation and by dous
ing each other with sweeping
handfuls of water.
Later in the day the men’s
novice/frosh 8 captured a third
place spot in their heat, qualify
ing them for the finals. They
finished with a fourth place
finish overall.
John Larson, Oregon crew
club publications man, noted
that this was an especially com
mendable accomplishment con
sidering the weight obstacles
confronting them. As all of the
other 10 clubs in this event
packed their shells with
heavyweight power, these
oarsmen faced the challenge
with only 3 of their 8 members
ranking in the heavyweight
class.
The men’s heavyweight 8
took a shot at the coveted
"Lafromboise Cup" on Sunday
but had to settle for a second
place finish as they were edged
out by Pacific Lutheran
University.
The most successful of the
Duck competitors was the
women's lightweight 8. After
having an undefeated season in
four previous races, they cap
tured "The Paula Mitchell and
Colleen Lynch Cup” by easily
defeating second place PLU in
their final competition.
Head coach Mike Holcomb,
tinged with delight over the
day’s events, pointed out that
the girls are seeded No. 1 going
into the Pacific Coast Cham
pionships in Sacramento next
weekend. They will be rowing
against six other clubs, in
cluding defending champion
San Diego State. With a win
there they are looking at the
probability of heading off to the
nationals.
Oregon crew member Gayle
Johnson, who represented the
United States in the lightweight
4 world class championships
last summer, says. "We’re very
strong this year. We have a good
chance, but it's going to take a
lot of work.”
Following the rigorous morn
ings throughout this past year,
that work will be second nature
for Oregon's crew.
