Brathwaite meet set for Saturday night
A dozen Olympians and
athletes from nine countries
will be the main attractions in
the Chris Brathwaite Memorial
track meet this Saturday even
ing at Hayward Field.
The meet will honor former
University runner and Trinidad
Olympic team member Chris
Brathwaite, who was shot and
killed by a sniper while jogging
near Autzen Stadium on Nov.
12.
Saturday's memorial meet,
being organized by Oregon In
ternational Athletics Team, will
start at 7:05 p.m. with the ham
mer. The first track event will
start at 7:30 p.m. with the men's
3,000-meter8.
The Brathwaite Memorial is
the first major track-and-field
meet to be held at night at
Hayward. The Oregon Track
Club masters program donated
the lights, allowing the night
setup.
There will be nine men's and
six women's events. On the
women’s side, the 3,000-meters
will feature Oregon All
American Kathy Hayes.
Hayes recently set the col
legiate record in the
5,OOO-meters in the Oregon Pep
si Relays at Hayward on May 4.
Hayes will run in the special
3,000 event against Cindy
Bremser, who has run the
fastest 1,500-meters in the
country this year. The Hayes
Bremser match-up will take
place at 9:45 p.m. and will be
the closing event of the night.
A special memorial will be
held in Brathwaite’s honor at
8:10 p.m. and will include a
presentation to the former run
ner’s widow and son. The meet
organizers will leave a lane
open in the 100- and 200-meter
races in Brathwaite’s honor.
Those sprint races feature
Cliff Wiley, formerly ranked the
No. 1 400-meter runner in the
world. Wiley is joined by
Jamaica’s Colin Bradford,
Fresno State University’s
Norquist three behind
PORTI.AND (AP) — Brent Murray, a 30-year-old assis

Edgewater Country Club.
Oregon golfer Gerry Norquist shot a 2-over-par 72 to stay
three shots off Murray. Norquist, at 142, is one stroke behind
Rick Garber for low amateur honors in the tournament.
Jeremiah Wheeler, Russell Paris
(a teammate of Brathwaite on
the Trinidad Olympic team) and
Oregon high-school sensation
Gus Envela from McKay High
School in Salem.
Envela competed in the 1984
Olympics in Los Angeles for the
Ecuatorial New Guinea, and he
will be joined by several other
prominent track-and-field stars.

runner and gold medalist at the
Pan-American Games, will be
entered in the women’s
800-meters.
