Men’s track team bombs OSU

CORVALLIS — The Oregon
men’s track-and-field team
finished its dual-meet season in
grand fashion Saturday, as the
Ducks downed the Oregon State
University Beavers 100-63 for
the 11th straight year.
The Ducks won 13 of the 19
events en route to giving coach
Bill Dellinger his 11th con
secutive winning season.
Oregon finished with dual
record of 4-3.
Oregon’s NCAA competitors
will remain at seven heading in
to the Pacific-10 Conference
Championships Friday and
Saturday in Tuscon, Ariz.
Some Ducks were looking for
some NCAA qualifying-marks,
but only a few came close in
Corvallis Saturday.
“There weren’t any great sur
prises,” Dellinger said. "1 think
our guys haven’t done anything
that inspirational, but they all
went out and did their jobs.
There were good marks but
nothing great.”
The Ducks’ best marks came
in the field events, where they
had five personal bests.
Oregon high jumper Walt
Reynolds became the first
jumper this season, the 10th in
Duck history, to clear the 7-0
mark. The junior’s jump won
the event over two Bears, who
tied for second at 6-10.
“It feels really good, not sur
prisingly,” Reynolds said. “I
wasn't really surprised to jump
it today. I just kind of knew it
was going to happen, and it
came real easy.”
Reynolds’ next task will be to

Reynolds earned a trip to the
Pac-10 meet by breaking out of a
pack of high jumpers that had
been deadlocked at around
6- 11. The mark he needs to
shoot for now is 7-3 V2.
“1 have the feeling now that
7- 0 is gone that the barrier is
broken, and it won't take quite
so long to improve.”
The Ducks’ other big per
formers in the field also produc
ed wins. Ken Flax hit a winning
240-6 mark in the hammer, and
Kory Tarpenning cleared 18-2'/a
to win the pole vault.
”1 thought about maybe put
ting it up to 19- V* i and I was
thinking about that last night,”
Tarpenning said in the wake of
Joe Dial’s American record
breaking jump of 19-1 Va on
Friday.
“I think I am capabale of jum
ping that high (19-*/•). but 18-2
to 19-0 is a pretty big jump. I
thought maybe if 1 could get
over 18-8 that would be a good
step on the way and then maybe
go onto 19-0.”
In the long jump, Uchenna
Agu took first (23-7 V«) but later
missed an opportunity to
qualify for the NCAA meet in
the triple jump. Agu finished
second at 47-4 Va after also com
peting in the 4x100 relay.
