Batters lose last two

Oregon closed its best softball season since 1980 on a
down note Tuesday, losing a pair of 1-0 games at Portland
State University.
The Ducks finished up 19-25, including a 2-7 record
against PSU.
Portland State’s Ronda Haun out-dueled Sony Schroeder
in nine innings in the first game, yielding three hits while
striking out six. Schroeder gave up four hits and fanned one
batter as she ended with a 7-12 season record.
In the second game, the Vikings scored a run in the first
inning and pitcher Leslie VanOver made it stand up with a
two-hitter. Sue Voeller (8-9) took the defeat for Oregon
despite striking out five batters and surrendering only four
hits.
Haun’s two triples — one each game — paced PSU,
while Lesley Stine rapped a single per game for the Ducks.
Oregon’s Stephanie Heisler collected a single in five at bat as
she finished her college career.
All that’s left for the team this season is an awards ban
quet Thursday night at the Oregon Electric Station. But based
on this season, the future seems bright for a young Duck -
squad that carries 10 freshmen, six sophomores, one junior,
and loses only Heisler to graduation.

Developing muscles and
finances for club snorts

After a crowded basketball game at McArthur
Court, the club sports crew team wanders into the
empty building to sweep away a menagerie of
gum wrappers, spilled popcorn, cigarette butts
and other assorted garbage in order to pay for
their new racing shells.
The Tae Kwon Do team spent last Sunday
morning cleaning up Hayward Field after the
Pepsi Relays to bring in revenue for a chance to
compete in Europe,
The lacrosse and ski teams spread barkdust
on the jogging track around the intramural fields
to raise funds for their clubs.
School "clean-ups” are not the only way
club teams earn money. The sailing team is spon
soring sailing clinics and lessons to the public to
earn money for their team. Next year, the ski team
is considering holding a large ski swap in order to
get the team to Whistler, Canada, for next
season’s regional competition.
