Non-competitive skiers encouraged Ski team is looking for participants By Kathy Zook Of the Emerald Winter skis and clothing may be going in the attic for the next few months, but the Univer sity’s alpine and nordic ski teams already are gearing up for next year’s season. With a new head coach and developmental coach, the club sports teams are looking for ward to a great year, but they are not waiting for the next snowfall before they begin training, says team manager Barbie Rogers. The ski club is encouraging all intermediate and above level skiers who are interested in joining the team to attend an organizational meeting Thurs day at 7:00 p.m. in Room 107/108 EMU. The club’s alpine and nordic team rosters are far from full, which is why the ski club is in need of new members, Rogers says. Normally, an alpine racing team is made up of eight men and eight women and a nordic team has three men and three women. Nordic skiers can compete either individually or as part of a three member relay team, says R\hu can have it all... with RIM! Currently there are leagues as follows: Men's I and II, Women's I and II, Coed I and II. The follow ing new league structure is being considered: Dorm league, Greek league and Open league. Within the Dorm and Greek league there would be divisions for men's, women's and coed play. The Open league would have a I and II division for men's, women's and coed teams. Dorms and Greeks could choose to play in the Open league. This idea is in the infant stage. If you have suggestions or comments, you may wish to put them in writing or come in and talk with Karla. However, due to a lack of membership, there is no relay team as of yet, she adds. “It (the nordic team) is totally depleted,” Keller says. “It is disappointing because there is no one to train with.” Despite the lack of team mates, Keller took a first and se cond place in two meets last a season and qualified for regional competition in Washington. Women’s individual nordic races "start easy" at 5 kilometers and progress to 7 kilometers by the end of the season. Men’s races start at 10 kilometers and progress to 15 kilometers, Keller says.
