Duck spring football practice ends on positive note By Brent De La Paz Of lh« Kmttrild With the defense looking impressive and tailback Tony Cherry propelling the offense, the Oregon football team ended its spring drills with optimism in the in trasquad scrimmage at Autzen Stadium on Saturday. Defense was the key point as several Ducks are vying for a starting position when fall drills open up. On offense, Cherry showed his versatility in running — and catching the football in the last practice before drills start in August. ‘‘i was relatively pleased with the scrimmage,” Oregon coach Rich Brooks said. “I think we solved a lot of things. Coming into the drills, Brooks was looking for an answer to the the middle linebacker spot. What he found were three people, Jerry Mikels, Darrin Colka and Ron Zemp, who were all ready to replace last year’s graduated starter, Bob Hudetz. 1 don’t know who is going to start,” Brooks said of the battle. “I’m trying to figure who is going to be one, two and three.” Brooks also discoverd that Oregon’s offense could be effective despite not having starting quarterback Chris Miller at full strength. Miller hit five of nine passes for 62 yards, but his sprained right shoulder wouldn’t allow him to throw deep. The Ducks’ offense was without flanker Lew Barnes, who had a class con flict. Barnes, Oregon’s Mr. Excitement, missed the 75-minute workout, but his absence didn't diminish from the of fense’s performance — especially Cherry who firmly claimed the starting position at tailback. Cherry gained 73 yards on nine carries and collected four passes for 45 yards. On top of that, the 5-8 senior from Vic torville, Calif., zoomed up the middle on a nifty 39-yard kickoff return. Oregon’s offense scored two touchdowns, and Matt MacLeod delivered a 32-yard field goal. The first TD was a Kevin Wilhite 1-yard plunge and the second came on Scott Holman’s 21-yard scoring catch from backup quarterback Tim Norton. With Miller not at 100 percent, Norton proved to Brooks that Oregon had a capable relief man during the spring practices. Norton, whose only major mistake was a tipped interception, hit six out of 11 passes for 70 yards. Brooks said the junior transfer from Tennessee “did some good things,” but felt the Ducks’ No. 2 signal caller had to improve on his accuracy. “We made a lot of progress,” Brooks said. “We are better than we were a year ago.” OSU takes 2 from UO Oregon was victimized by clutch hits and good pitching Sunday, as Oregon State University swept a softball double-header from the Ducks, 5-2 and 3-2 at Ropes Field in Corvallis. Although Oregon outhit OSU both games, the Beavers made the most of the their chances. OSU upped its record to 21-22, while Oregon dropped to 17-23. Lisa Ginoza's line drive to left field scored Sharon Tackett in the bottom of the seventh inn ing to give OSU a 3-2 win in the second game. The Beavers came back from a 2-1 deficit. Oregon left fielder Stephanie Heisler nearly made a spectacular div ing catch of Ginoza's hit. but the ball popped out of her mitt. Sony Schroeder gave up seven hits in taking the loss for Oregon, and OSU's Toni Williamson got the victory despite surrendering eight hits. in the first game. OSU won on only two hits. One of them, however, was a three-run inside-the-park home run, by Lianne Watanabe in the fourth.
