Cyclists race locally
The 5th Tour Willamette Bicycle Stage Race will begin
this year in Junction City at Laurel Park Thursday at 3 p.m.
The race will feature members of the British Olympic team,
the United States and Canadian national teams plus
numerous international professional cyclists.
The race will get into full swing Friday with a new addi
tion to the race, the men’s B field and women’s race. Cycling
fans should have themselves planted at Armitage Park by 3
p.m. if they want to see the action live.
Saturday’s race will start west of Churchill and the final
stage will be in Skinners Butte Park Sunday. For more Tour

Clinic featuring Olympians Jon
Anderson and Mike Manely
following the Oregon-UCLA
track meet to be held at
Hayward Field Saturday. Ac
tivities include a special video
presentation featuring the 1984
Olympic Games and one of
Steve Prefontaine’s most ex
citing races. There will be prize
drawings and a run with Ander
son and Manley after the clinic.
Orthopedic Surgeon Dr. Stan
James will be available for
discussion of proper health care
for runners. The clinic is free
and open to the public.
•The Survival Center will be
holding its second annual Earth
Run April 20 as part of its 15th
annual Earthweek Celebration
which begins April 17. The race
will start at 11:00 a.m. in the
Cambell Senior Center parking
lot. A 10K and 2-mile fun run
will be held simultaneously on
the same course, which follows
the bike paths in Skinner Butte
Park. Registration begins at 9:30
a.m., or pre-registration forms
may be picked up at the Sur
vival Center Suite 1 EMU.

He credited Brooks and Don Monson, men's
basketball coach, for taking time after games to
discuss the contests on the live post-game wrap
up shows. "There were a few games. . .when I
know they’d have just as soon not come up and
talked about it,” Ramey chuckled. “But they did,
quickly and graciously. I appreciated it, and so
did our listeners.”
Ramey realizes that he holds a position
which has not been noted for its stability. "When
I came up here I noted a trend toward turnover in
the Oregon (sportscaster’s) job,” he said.
“Hopefully, that trend will, reverse.”
KUGN and the University set out to do just
that when they launched, a nationwide search for
a new announcer last'summer, after Bill Johnson
went the way of his seven predecessors in the
previous 15 years.
Hal Ramey may be the welcome break in that
chain — perhaps even the first "Voice of the
Ducks” of the 21st century.
