Oregon women have too much for FSU By Robert Collias Of lb« Kmorald The Oregon women’s track team opened Us 1985 dual meet season in impressive style Saturday as the Ducks swamped the Fresno State University Bulldogs, 95-41 in the rain at Hayward Field. Oregon took control of the meet early as the Ducks won four of the first five events to build a commanding 32-8 lead and shoot down any upset the Bulldogs might have harbored. The temperature hovered around 50 degrees most of the afternoon, and the visitors from California seemed to be a little bothered by the wet and rainy Oregon conditions. The meet was really never a contest as Oregon coach Tom Heinonen was able to hold out his four national champions and still put FSU away with ease. Leann Warren (800- and 1,500-meters) and Claudette Groenendaal (1,500) rested, while Kathy Hayes (lO.OOO-meters) ran in a prestigious cross country meet in Italy. Sally Harmon (javelin) was available, but she won't be eligible until next week when spring term classes start. “We really don’t mind com peting in the rain,” Heinonen said. 'Of course the marks can’t be that good on a day like this, but we competed real well." FSU coach Tom Pagani wasn’t displeased with his teams performance despite the lopsided score. "I don’t think we did that badly, but I did think we would be better as a team,” Pagani said. "Oregon has such a great tradition and their athletes live up to the billing.” The Ducks’ marks were good enough to overwhelm the Bulldogs in the team score as some individual performances stood out for Oregon. Tracy Raade, a senior from Seattle, swept the 100- and 200-meter races against some highly-touted sprinters from FSU. Raade’s winning times of 12.54 and 25.22 were not world class by any means, but they were impressive when con sidering that the runners were running into a strong head wind all day long. Most of the Bulldogs were clad in long sleeved shirts and tights under their shorts, but Raade and her teammates stayed with the traditional green and yellow shorts and singlets and maybe a few goose bumps. "I think the rain worked to our advantage," Raade said. Raade was followed to the finish line by teammate Cam Talton in both races as the Ducks broke the Bulldogs at their strength, the sprints. Janell Thorsland opened the scoring for the Ducks with a wind-aided 19-1 long jump win. Teammate Julie Goodrich . finished third at 18-2 and later .added a win in the triple jump, by hitting an effort of 37-5. Goodrich finished a busy day by running the third leg on the Ducks' victorious mile-relay team. "We were ready to compete today," Goodrich said. "We needed to compete against so meone new, and today was fun.” Gretchen Nelson turned in one of the most impressive per formances of the day in winning the 3,000-meters. Nelson has been .sidelined with a stress fracture, in her leg since December. Confined to working out in the swimming pool since the cross-country season. Nelson stepped back onto the track Saturday and won the 3,000 meters in 9i39.85. Birgit Petersen and Rosa Gutierrez completed the Oregon sweep in the event.' Brenda Bushnell led another Duck sweep in the 1,500-meters as she won in 4:26.71. Bushnell, who is recovering from a back injury suffered in a car accident in January, was on ly one second off her personal best in the race. Bushnell was followed by teammates Deanna Schiedler and Tomsin Valdez. “It felt real good to run against someone new,” Bushnell said. “Sometimes you can get down in practice com peting against all the world class athletes we have around here.” In the 400-meter run, Julie Hilsenteger ran a personal best of 56.40 to get the victory for the Ducks. Hilsenteger was primari ly a 400-meter hurdler last year, but she seems to have made the change to the 400 without any problems. “I had some trouble last year, but today results are really en couraging,” Hilsenteger said. Melissa Bauer won the 400-meter hurdles in 1:03.61 as the Ducks won 11 of 16 events in the meet. In the field, Oregon con tinued its domination as Quen na Beasley won the shot put at 52-2 and finished third in the discus at 152-7. Cora Aguilar also doubled in the shot and discus for the Ducks as she finished third in the shot and second in the discus. “We competed really well, but the weather held us down a bit today,” Heinonen said.
