Oregon collects win in Hawaii By Adam Worcester Of the Emerald The Oregon’s women’s soft ball team, aided by pitcher Susan Voeller’s two-hitter, posted an easy 2-0 victory Sun day against Chapman College in the Ducks’ final game of the Hawaii Softball Tournament at Manoa, Hawaii this weekend. Voeller struck out three hitters and her teammates backed her with six hits — triple the Ducks’ combined total in the first two tournament games — as Oregon finished the tournament with a 1-2 record. Shortstop Jackie Coburn hit a double, and Kim Heddinger ripped a triple to pace the Ducks. Oregon dropped two games Saturday to start the tourney. In the first, Fresno State Universi ty held the Ducks to one hit, while pounding out nine in a 5-1 victory. Voeller, coming back from a pulled hamstring, started the contest and was relieved by Sony Schroeder. In the second game, Oregon forced top-ranked UCLA to go eight in nings before succumbing, 1-0. The Ducks again managed only one hit, but Cindy Garrett and Schroeder combined to hold the Bruins to four hits. Oregon next travels to Portland, where it will take on Portland State University Thursday at 2:30 p.m. Then, on Friday and Saturday, the Ducks travel to Forest Grove for the Pacific University Tournament. Sports Shorts The Oregon golf team finished in 12th place in the two-day Pepsi-Fresno State Classic men’s golf tourna ment held Friday and Satur day in Fresno, Calif. The Ducks were eighth after the first two rounds but finished with a two-day total of 1,137. George Daves turn ed in Oregon's best score, a 224, 24 strokes behind the leader, while John DeLong finished with a 228. The Oregon men’s tennis team concluded its trip through California with only one win in three matches as they downed Butte College with a 9-0 victory Sunday in California. The doubles team of Mur phy Dysart and Judy along with Wiley Smith went 3-0 on the trip that included a 7-2 loss to the University of California-Santa Cruz Fri day. The Ducks also lost to the Orinda Country Club. 6-5 on Saturday. Oregon moved to 7-4 for the season and will return home for a match Thursday against the University of Portland at Portland. The Duck women’s tennis team went 3-0 over the break in California and will be on the 15th Street Courts on Tuesday for a match against Southern Oregon State Col lege.
