Ducks collect 3 hits, 2 losses against OSU

Behind the strength of their
pitching game, the Oregon State
University Beavers swept a
double-header from the Oregon
women’s softball team. 6-0 and
6-0. Sunday afternoon at
Oregon Field.
Joan Harvey, who pitched a
full seven innings in the first
match-up. recorded 13
strikeouts against the Ducks, in
cluding eight of the first nine
Oregon hitters. In the end. the
senior held the Ducks to only
one hit.
Harvey also retired 18 straight
hitters before walking Lesley
Stine in the bottom of the
seventh inning. With Stine on
base, the Ducks’ Kim Heddinger
collected Oregon’s only hit,
spoiling Harvey’s chance for a
no-hitter.
“We got a little bit behind
(their pitching); our bats were
too slow.” Oregon coach P.J.
Harlin said. "Once we would
catch up and make contact, it
wasn’t enough, it was Just a lit
tle bit too late.’*
The Beavers knocked in four
■ of their six runs during a second
inning in which they brought
eight hitters to the plate. During

6-0 rout.
During the Beavers’ fifth
inning rally, they reeled off five
hits in a row, including back-to
back triples by Erin Capps and
Harvey as OSU brought home
four hitters in a row.
But it was pitching again that
keyed the OSU victory. This
time around it was Karen
Schoonover retiring the first
eight Oregon hitters, and 13 of
the 15 she faced. Sharon Tackett
also pitched two relief innings
for the Beavers and gave up one
hit to clinch the shutout. '
Heddinger collected Oregon’s
only hit off Tackett, while
freshman outfielder Jo Garcia
found the one hit against
Schoonover in the top of the
third inning.
Misfortune also struck the
Ducks off the field, forcing them
to pitch Schroeder in both
games. In her second seven inn
ings, she gave up seven hits,
again walking two and striking
out two.
’’We had one pitcher declared
ineligible (Cindy Garrett) on
Friday and another pitcher
(Susan Voeller) with a pulled
hamstring, so Sony had to go at
it, and she just isn’t ready for
that yet,” Harlin said of her
sophomore pitcher from Chur
chill High School.
The two games were the
season-openers- for Oregon,
'although they won’t be record
ed as league losses'. Meanwhile,
the Beavers moved 'to, 4-6 this
