Expires: 3-31-85 NEWMUSIC Band reflects '80s sound Though in spired by the music of the mid-'60s. True West is truly a band of the ’80s. A neo-psychedelic band from California, True West makes its second Eugene ap pearance Saturday night at 9:30 at the W.O.W. Hall. True West’s guitarist Russ Tolman says the band takes in spiration from such classic mid-'60s bands as Creedence Clearwater Revival, the Byrds and Television. But its sound, with its effec tive addition of what’s been learned about music since the mid-'60s, reflects the '80s. This mixture of styles has earned the band recognition in magazines, such as Rolling Stone, where True West receiv ed a three and a half-star review for its current album. It also made the list of ‘*1984’s Hot New Bands.” In England’s Melody Maker, the band received a full-page write-up. Some critics compare True West’s full-bodied sound to other bigger-name bands. “If I wanted to be mean (and ac curate),” says Mikal Gilmore in the Los Angeles Herald Ex aminer, "I could say that this Sacramento band pulls off the same big, dense splendor that English overachievers like U2 and Big Country only lurch after.” True West, whose name is taken from a Sam Shephard play of the same name, formed in 1982 as one of many bands in California’s “Paisley Underground” movement. Before joining True West, members Tolman and vocalist Gavin Blair had been in a band called the Suspects, along with Dream Syndicate-founders Steve Wynn and Kendra Smith. Late in 1982, True West released a single called “Lucifer Sam.” Only 500 copies were ever printed, and the single is now a collector’s item, selling for as much as $25 in New York. In 1983, True West released an EP called "Hollywood Holi day” and began to carve a place for themselves in the na tional music scene as they toured the nation. The band's first Eugene appearance, at an EMIT Ballroom beer garden, came during this initial surge. Vocalist Blair is said to have met his fiancee at that concert. Late last year, the band released its first full-length album, called “Drifters.” and again True West’s popularity boomed. The album was rated as one of 1984's top ten by the New York Times, as well as the London Times. It has ex perienced extensive college radio station airplay. New York Times music critic Robert Palmer calls the album “heart felt and gorgeous.” Tickets for Saturday even ing’s performance are $4 at the door, and all ages are welcome. The concert is spon sored by the Community Center for the Performing Arts, and the band is welcomed by 91.9 FM KRVM. True West can be heard on KRVM’s Radio ’80s program from 10:30 p.m. to midnight, Monday through Saturday, and from 4 p.m. to midnight on Sunday.
