Bruins ruin Oregon finale

With all the fanfare and emo
tion of five seniors playing their
final game in McArthur Court,
the Oregon men’s basketball
team seemed ready to close out
a roller-coaster season on a up
ward and winning note.

Bell, Greg Trapp and Mike
Matheson as a tribute for their
contributions to the Duck
basketball program.
The only problem is the
Ducks gave a final performance
symbolic of their 1984-85 yo-yo
season. Oregon rebounded but

heart-breaking victory Saturday
night before a sell-out crowd of
10,099.
This season has had so many
twists and turns for the Ducks
that even Indiana Jones couldn't
have escaped all the perilous
siuations Oregon has en
countered in the topsy-turvy
Pacific-10 Conference. The
Ducks tried another narrow
escape Saturday, but found the
familiar Temple of Gloom in the
end as UCLA hit its free throws
to hold on to the win.
The Ducks found themselves
in a battle with a Bruin team,
who was looking at the game as
a springboard into the 64-team
National Collegiate Association
Basketball Championship ex
travaganza. With that in mind,
UCLA raced to a 30-21 advan
tage at halftime before the
Ducks could get untracked.
At the beginning of the se
cond half. UCLA wanted to pro
ve its 16-11 record was anything
but mediocre and worthy of an
NCAA bid. The Ducks were the
ones to pay the price as the
Bruins ripped off a 17-8 run to
go ahead 47-29 with 12:41 left.
It seemed the Ducks' farewell
celebration had laid an egg
before the capacity Mac Court
crowo.
But like so many times this
season, the Ducks woke from
their sleeping lumber to make a
game out of it. Oregon awaken
ed to cut the. Bruins' .
18-point lead to 12. Kenny
Sprague and Greg Trapp led the
charge as the Ducks closed
within 47-35 with 11:31 left.
From there. Oregon slowly'
whittled the lead despite having.
its best offensive weapon.
Rasmussen, playing on borrow-''
ed time with four fouls.

said of the Ducks, who finished
15-16 for the year and 8-10* in
the conference.
Rasmussen picked up his fifth
foul with 1:55 left. UCLA's
Dave Immel, the former Oregon
prep standout, hit one of two
fouls shots to give the Bruins.a
63-54 lead. UCLA coach Walt
Hazzard was confident of the
victory and the Bruins’ post
season chances.
However, UCLA and Oregon
got into a fouling duel that
brought the Ducks back into the
game. With 1:05 left, the Bruins
still had a nin-point lead, 68-59,
but Oregon’s four remaining
seniors weren’t about to give
up.
First, Matheson hit a bank
shot to cut the lead to seven, but
missed the free throw on a
possible three-point play. Then
Trapp nailed a rebound bucket
to cut it to five points. UCLA ad
ded a foul shot to up the lead to
six points with 38 seconds re
maining, 69-63.
Then Harper took command
of the Ducks' final run as he hit
a 7-footer to cut the lead to four,
69-65 with 28 seconds left. On
