Planning the Ducks’ football future
Pacific Coast Athletic Association teams like Long Beach State will continue to challenge Oregon football teams
for years to come, just as the 49ers’ defense took on Duck fullback Kevin McCall last fall at Autzen Stadium.

Recruiting potential football talent isn’t the
only building for the future that the University
football program does during winter and spring.
While Coach Rich Brooks and his staff are fat
tening future grid rosters. Athletic Director Bill
Byrne is beefing up football game schedules that
will test Duck teams well into the 1990s.
Byrne, a member of the Pacific-10 Conference
scheduling committee, is preparing tentative con
ference football schedules for 1987 and beyond,
which will be set by the committee when it meets
in May.
At the same time, Byrne is working to
“round out” future Duck football slates with non
conference games that will provide excitement
for fans, competition for the team and adequate
revenue for the athletic department’s budget.
Byrne said that the Pac-10 has approved new
scheduling rules for conference games, which
will take effect during the '87 season as well.
“We want to balance schedules so each team
plays the same number of home and away games;
we’ll avoid scheduling home games for two
neighboring schools like ourselves and OSU or
Cal and Stanford on the same day; and we want to
