Students eet inside view of business world L-J ttlvlUll tn the open to students of any major, McKen By Dianna Snawder Of the Emerald A program that gives University students an inside view into their field of study by matching them with local businesses for half a day will take place Thursday. • . , Alpha Kappa Psi, an organization tor University business and economics ma jors, is sponsoring the Half Day On The lob program, which allows students to spend a morning observing businesses related to their fields, says Margaret McKenney, vice president of profes sional activities for Alpha Kappa Psi. The once-a-term program is designed to place students in actual on-the-job situations, McKenney says. Students are matched with businesses from the Eugene/Springfield area according to their personal preferences, she says. Participants will get a better insight into what really goes on within actual businesses, McKenney says. "You get an idea of how your major relates to the world,” McKenney says. “It helps you make sure that your lear ning is relevant.” By introducing students to people within their field, the program helps students develop possible future business contacts, McKenney says. Students pay $5 for the day, which goes toward the cost of organizing the event, McKenney says. When students arrive at the com pany, their host explains various aspects of the business, concentrating on particular areas of interest to the students. McKenney says. The students are observers because there isn’t enough time to really par ticipate in business transactions, says Chris Pryor of MarStat. a Eugene-based marketing and research company par ticipating in the program. Other businesses acting as hosts this term include First Interstate Bank ot Oregon and Industrial Publishing Co., Eugene-based international publishing company. The program, which started in the 1960s using the name Half Day With Company, is designed for those in the business school and related fields but is open to students ot any major, Mciven ney says. “It provides practical exposure, Pryor says. ‘‘You can learn the theory, but the day-to-day things are important to know.” About 18 students, mostly business majors, signed up for the program this term, McKenney says. She attributes the small turnout to lack of advertising. Last spring term, the program match ed more than 40 students with businesses. Students who did not apply this term are encouraged to sign up for the spring term program scheduled for May 16. Applications will be available at the Alpha Kappa Psi office at the beginning of spring term. et aL__ MEETINGS SAILING TEAM meeting tonight at 7:30 in the EMU.
