Newman: Football is his first love
By Mahlon Beachy
Of the Emerald
Today, few athletes can com
pete in more than one sport at
the college or pro level. The
training and specialized skills
required to excel at one sport
are seldom applicable to
another. A few athletes, like
former Eugene star Dan Ainge,
succeed at two or three sports
because of their knowledge of
the games they play. Others,
like ex-University basketballer
Ron Lee, achieve multi-sport
success through intense desire
and competitive fervor. Then
there are those who excel at vir
tually any sport they try because
of their speed, strength and
athletic ability. Anthony
Newman is one of those for
tunate few.
Newman, who will be a
sophomore this fall, is a promis
ing cornerback for the Duck
football team. But he was also
the third pick of the Cleveland
Indians baseball team, and the
53rd pick overall, in the secon
dary phase of the baseball draft
several weeks ago.
“I was really surprised,” said
Newman. “A couple guys came
up to me in the weight room
and said ‘congratulations on
getting drafted.’ I said ‘what, in
baseball again?' I was drafted by
the Toronto Blue Jays in the
23rd round of the primary draft
in June, but I hadn’t heard
anything about Cleveland.”
