DRINKING
•It took awhile to get this super issue coordinated.
My throat is sore from uttering phrases such as,
“Wait a minute, not everyone can go to Hoots,” or
“Sorry, we’ve already got the Cafe Zenon covered,” and
so on.
But it was worth it.
All the writers who contributed to the restaruant part
of the section are to be commended. You may not agree
with their assessments, but that’s half the fun. With an
open assignment such as this (“Write a food review on
any place that strikes your fancy,”) things can go a little
haywire. And they did. We’ve got Scampi’s and we’ve
got Rax. We had someone (thanks, Stasia) eating
oatmeal, of all things, at the Original Pancake House.
We’ve got cuisine ranging from “Kentucky Nuggets” to
falafel.
But editing didn’t give me a headache. It just made
my mouth water.
Granted, there are some places in this section that
you probably wouldn’t think of trying. We hope, with our
wily and provocative prose that begins on Page 4B and
continues through The Friday Edition, to convince you
otherwise. Happy reading and happy eating.
•Most agree that dining and drinking go hand in hand.
Emerald writer Dave Carlson visited one of his favorite
bars, the Vet’s Club, where students mingle with old
timers. Despite trouble getting detailed information
from employees (apparently a former Emerald staff had
given the club some bad press), Dave, with the memory
of a powerful Vet’s gin and tonic on his mind, craftily
captures the mood of the place. See Page 3B.
•Mike Duncan found something to laugh about at the
Factory in Springfield: Every Monday is “Live Comedy
Night.” On Pages 6B and 7B, Mike and photographer
Dean Guernsey present a taste of what you can expect
if you too, venture out Main Street far enough.
